Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan De Maria
Hi Meghan , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We met at Margarita Mamas in New York City when our oldest boys were babies. 20 years later, we are still partners in crime!
I founded Moss Design in 2014 after my passion for design prompted me to go back to school for a formal education in Interior Design. My career began in fashion after I graduated from Providence College with an art history degree and business studies concentration. From there, I worked at Smith Barney honing in my business skills. I then took time off to raise my three children in Southport, CT. During this time, I rediscovered my passion for interior design, a career that encapsulates my expertise in textiles, design and business.
Courtney Yanni joined Moss Design in 2015, one year after it was founded, bringing her sophisticated style and background in lifestyle television production to the firm. Courtney graduated from The University of Michigan and then went on to earn a degree from the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts in Boston. She was an early employee of the Food Network, working her way up in food and lifestyle television production, working for luminaries such as Martha Stewart. After her three children went off to school I asked Courtney to join me at Moss Design.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We always say that Interior Design is 25% creativity and 75% logistics, hardware, and grit! We have definitely had homes with unexpected challenges however we’ve managed to work through these challenges with a good perceptive and always a bit of humor. We are not curing cancer here! While our work is important as our clients are entrusting us with what is most likely the largest investment they will ever make, we keep it in perspective. Our families always come first, and our friendship with each other and our amazing team supports us through the ups and downs.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The firm has cultivated a network of best-in-industry artisans, from our custom workroom to lauded cabinetry and furniture makers and a cadre of skilled and trusted tradespeople. We credit our deep respect for the craft and belief in open collaboration as the basis of our strength in these partnerships.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Keep your work in perspective. We are not curing cancer. What matters in life is the people – family and friends. We love our job because we are able to design spaces that bring people together.
