Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Middleton.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since childhood, I’ve been creative and crafty. I would make scrapbooks, practice my handwriting, and decorate my room with things I made. As I got older, my love for creating things with my hands continued to grow! When I became a teacher, I displayed some of my work in my classroom and one item, in particular, was a wreath on my door. My colleagues would ask where I found something so “cute and personalized”, and would be amazed when I shared that I made things myself. It was then that my crafting hobby became monetized! I made more wreaths for my coworkers, learned to make bowties for my friends, and kept expanding the products I would make. In 2014, my best friends encouraged me to formalize my business and thus, Meg’s Makings was born!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Business ownership is extremely challenging at times but the reward is amazing! Learning how to operate as a legitimate business was and is still a learning process, and I’ve made many mistakes, but my love for my business and making my customers happy always supersedes any frustrations that come along. One of the biggest challenges is what seems like a lack of time! I’ve remained an active employee for other companies but have been just as diligent to grow my business! It can be exhausting to balance time and give the same amount of effort and energy to multiple aspects of your life, but knowing that my business is appreciated and serves a need gives me all the feels!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Before becoming the owner of Meg’s Makings, I was most known for being a Music teacher. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, and taught Elementary Music, and Middle School Chorus! What makes me most proud about this is that I was able to do all of the artistic things that I loved: Music and Crafting. I have since transitioned from teaching but my love of music will never die, and I still get to serve diligently in my church’s Creative Arts Department. Most recently I’ve returned to graduate school for a Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am excited that I will continue to have opportunities to serve my community!
What makes you happy?
I grew up in a tightly-knit family structure, so I am most happy when I am spending time with my family and friends! I enjoy making memories by traveling with loved ones or engaging in fun activities that make us laugh together!
