Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Miller
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up apart of the Groucho’s family, my career in the restaurant industry started at a young age. When I was eight, my father used to make me work the cash register at the 5 Points location in Columbia. As I stood on my barstool to see the customers, I realized that interacting with customers on a daily basis was in my future. These beginnings gave me a passion to work with my family and propelled me to be the most sociable eight year old on the planet. Ten years later it was time for me to spread my wings, I moved to Charleston to study entrepreneurship and business at the College of Charleston. I loved my experience at The College, but it was short lived. I took the knowledge I acquired from my entrepreneurship classes and applied it to the real world. At age 20 I opened my first Groucho’s franchise in Mount Pleasant and the rest is history. I have learned more than I ever could have in the classroom by planting myself in a risky endeavor. Using the skills I acquired when I was eight, I have built lifelong relationships with the Mount Pleasant customers and have maintained a passion of providing top tier customer service and relations. I always knew that a second restaurant was in my future and those dreams are starting to come to reality. A second Groucho’s location in Charleston is coming to West Ashley in March, and I am excited to bring the Groucho’s culture to another part of the city. Mount Pleasant and West Ashley are just the tip of the iceberg. I plan to open as many Groucho’s locations in the Charleston area as possible and I am excited to do it with my newest business partner and lifelong best friend, Nicholas Basile. We have dreamed about opening a business together since we were kids and the West Ashley location will be the start of this lifelong dream he and I both possessed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been the smoothest. Whether it was working long hours, staff shortages, or product shortages I have seen it all and have learned the skill of thinking on my feet and the ability to adapt to any situation.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Groucho’s Deli?
Groucho’s Deli started in 1941 in Columbia, SC. Under the leadership of my father Bruce Miller, the brand has expanded to over 30 locations across SC, NC, and GA. Groucho’s Deli is known for our hot subs, high quality meats, and most importantly our signature 45 Sauce, a true staple of South Carolina culture. Providing top tier customer service mixed with a passion for quality has kept us in business for over 80 years.
What are your plans for the future?
Planning to open several Groucho’s locations in the Charleston area. A West Ashley location is set to open in. March of 2025
