Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Bronson.
Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At Big Balls Ranch, our story begins with family, a shared dream, and a deep respect for the natural world. As our family grew, so did our vision of one day living on a wide stretch of land—where we could reconnect with nature, raise animals that inspire us, and build something meaningful to pass down for generations. Our father has always held a lifelong passion for bison—majestic animals that symbolize strength, freedom, and the enduring spirit of the American frontier. In 2019, that dream became reality when we purchased our first hundred acres in the foothills of Cleveland, South Carolina. What started as a bold idea has since blossomed into a thriving, purpose-driven bison ranch.
The name Big Balls Ranch (BBR) may spark a smile, and that’s part of its charm. It was born out of a playful moment between our parents—our mother wanted to incorporate both her and our father’s initials in the name and was inspired by the natural decor she used throughout our home: hand-woven wooden and grass balls. What began as a lighthearted suggestion stuck—and it stuck for a reason. Beyond the humor, the name represents courage, grit, and the boldness it takes to step into the unknown. Bison ranching isn’t for the faint of heart—it demands strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment. In the process, we’ve gained a profound respect for these incredible animals and the land they call home.
Here at Big Balls Ranch, we embrace the values of freedom, adventure, and connection—both to nature and to one another. When you visit us, you’ll travel a winding mountain road that leads to panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s here, atop our ridge, where time seems to slow, the air feels lighter, and the land offers a peacefulness that’s hard to put into words.
We’re proud to welcome guests for private tours where you can meet our bison, hear our story firsthand, and experience the beauty of our land up close. Whether you’re a nature lover, a curious traveler, or someone seeking a little peace and perspective, Big Balls Ranch offers a space to breathe, connect, and be inspired.
This is more than just a ranch—it’s a living legacy built on family, faith, and the belief that life is meant to be lived boldly.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At Big Balls Ranch, we’ve always believed that raising bison requires more than just land—it demands knowledge, patience, and deep respect for the animals and their natural behaviors. When we purchased our property in 2019, we knew that we weren’t going to rush into anything. Instead, we committed ourselves to years of education and hands-on experience before bringing bison to our land. Our father, who has always admired the strength and majesty of these animals, had the incredible opportunity to learn under the mentorship of Fred Ilse, the respected owner of Tatanka Bison Ranch. For nearly two years, our father worked closely with Fred, gaining invaluable insight into proper herd management, humane handling practices, and the unique rhythms of bison life. When Fred and his family decided to retire, we were honored to carry on their legacy by purchasing the very same bison from their ranch—trusted animals that we already knew and respected deeply.
In 2024, we welcomed our herd to Big Balls Ranch, fully prepared and deeply committed to their care. We recently completed our very first annual bison roundup—a process that can often be daunting and unpredictable. However, thanks to careful planning, a familiar and experienced veterinarian, Dr. Brenton Gwinn, who has cared for these animals year after year, and the helping hands of devoted volunteers and family members, the entire roundup was completed smoothly in under three hours. What could have been a stressful ordeal turned out to be a testament to preparation, teamwork, and the gentle, respectful approach we take toward our animals. We are incredibly grateful for how well it went and confident that each roundup in the years ahead will continue to reflect the same care and intention. At Big Balls Ranch, we’re not just raising bison—we’re honoring their legacy, their beauty, and the incredible journey that brought them, and us, here.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Big Balls Ranch, education is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that raising bison comes with a responsibility—not only to care for these incredible animals with respect and integrity, but also to help others understand their profound significance to our land and nation. Bison are more than just majestic creatures; they are living symbols of resilience, strength, and the untamed spirit of America. Once nearly driven to extinction, bison have made a remarkable comeback thanks to conservation efforts and the dedication of ranchers and stewards across the country. Their presence enriches the land—restoring native grasses, supporting biodiversity, and playing a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Here in the Upstate of Greenville, South Carolina, bison are a rare sight, and that’s why we are passionate about sharing their story with every visitor who comes to Big Balls Ranch. Whether you’re touring the ranch, meeting the herd, or simply enjoying the view from our mountaintop, we make it a priority to educate and inspire, offering a deeper appreciation for these remarkable animals and the vital role they play in both our history and our future.
