Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric Gibson.
Hi Lyric, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began in high school, where baking became a therapeutic outlet for me during a very difficult time in my life. It wasn’t just a hobby, it was a way for me to cope, create, and bring a little joy into an otherwise chaotic world. I found comfort in the kitchen, and I found purpose in sharing what I made with others. I would often bake for teachers and friends, not just to practice, but because it made them happy. Helping others feel joy became one of the ways I was able to heal.
Several of my teachers saw something in me early on. They encouraged me to pursue both education, community service and entrepreneurship, telling me I had a gift. Not just in baking, but in connecting with people. Those words stuck with me and planted the seeds for what I do now.
Today, I’m a single mother of two, a substitute teacher, and the owner of a home based bakery called Seabreeze Treats & Sweets. I started the business in between work and parenting, as a way to bring in extra income and still be present for my kids. What began as a side passion has grown into something so much more meaningful…. not only a creative outlet, but a way to support my family, serve my community, and continue spreading joy through the little details.
I’ve faced my share of challenges, but I’ve always believed that purpose can come from pain. Baking gave me purpose, and it’s led me to where I am today!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and to be honest, I’m still facing many of those challenges today. One of the biggest obstacles has been financial. There are so many local events I’d love to be part of, but I often can’t afford the vendor fees or the cost of producing inventory upfront. I know the value of those opportunities, but the reality is, sometimes I just have to say no and wait for a better time.
Space is another ongoing struggle. Running a baking business from an apartment means I’m constantly working around the limitations of a small kitchen. Storage is tight, and producing larger quantities of my products can be difficult. It limits how much I can take on, even when demand is there.
Despite these challenges, I keep pushing forward. I do what I can with what I have and I hold onto the hope that the right opportunities, resources, or connections will come along to help me grow. I’ve built everything from the ground up, and I’m proud of that! But I know there’s still so much more I can do with the right support.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Seabreeze Treats & Sweets is my home based baking business in Myrtle Beach, SC, where I specialize in handcrafted baked goods that are made from scratch, and themed treats that are visually creative. While I offer a variety of desserts, including mini donuts, mini cakes, chocolate covered treats, scones, and more, I’m especially known for my beach themed items. They’ve become my most requested and signature offerings!
What truly sets my work apart is the level of detail I bring to every order. I don’t just decorate, but I design with intention. For example, when I create edible “sand,” I blend different tones and textures to reflect the look of actual beach sand. My shells are sand coated, with little chips to mimic the ones you’d find washed ashore, and I use sugar crystals to represent the glimmer of glassy grains beneath your feet. With floral themed items, I leave long green stems on chocolate dipped strawberries so the bees I add look like they’re landing on real flowers.
That level of care is what I’m most proud of brand wise. I see beauty in the small things, and I believe that’s what brings treats to life. While I can absolutely make simple or classic items, most customers come to me when they want something thoughtful, memorable, and full of character.
At the end of the day, Seabreeze Treats & Sweets is about more than dessert! It’s about creating something meaningful that makes people smile, whether they’re celebrating a big event or just treating themselves to something sweet.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Myrtle Beach is the sense of creativity and community. It’s a beautiful, inspiring place filled with small businesses and people who are very passionate about what they do. The beach itself plays a huge role in my work, and it’s a big part of why my beach themed treats resonate so well with customers. There’s something magical about living in a place that feels like a destination!
What I find most challenging, though, is the lack of support systems…. especially for single parents like myself. I work hard in everything I do, but there are very few resources for families trying to get on their feet. The lack of funding and rental assistance has been a major setback for me. It limits my ability to grow, because the more time I spend focused on surviving, the less time I’m able to put into building my business. There’s so much potential here, and I hope to see more investment in supporting the people who are trying to create something better for themselves and their families.
Still, I haven’t given up, and I won’t. I believe that with the right support, I can take Seabreeze Treats & Sweets to the next level. I’m committed to building something meaningful for my children and my community, and I’m hopeful that opportunities will continue to open up for people like me who just need a chance to grow.
