Meet Lisa Brown of North Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Brown

Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I went to school in 1999 to become a cosmetologist because my mother in law at the time was loosing her battle to cancer. She saw my love of doing hair, and cooking. She wanted me to obtain a career that would allow me to be there for my kids whenever they needed me. I obtained my Cosmotology license In 2000. My husband and I purchased my first salon business in 2006. It is a rewarding business that i enjoy still today. On the other hand, I’ve always had a love for food. I catered various events since the 1990’s. I gave in to my passion for cooking, and started Epic’s Event Venue LLC Catering and Mobile Food Venue in 2019 till this present day. It’s not easy juggling 2 self owned businesses, however, God, and the support of my family, keep me going. Serving people is my gift, and I enjoy doing it!. My husband John, and my kids are my biggest supporters. They help me in all aspects of my food truck and catering events.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing worth having is ever easy. I worked a full-time job from 8-5pm. Went to cosmetology school at night from 5:30-10:30pm. Did hair at night from 11-2am for 2 years while earning my Cosmetology license. My girls at that time were 5 & 8 years old. I spent every free moment and every weekend with them. It was a hard sacrifice to do, however, I wanted to teach, my girls, that, if you don’t give up, your hard work will be rewarded in the end. God will never withhold any good thing from you. Just trust and keep the faith. 🙏.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
A hair salon, and a Catering business, both require, sacrificial time, patience, and understanding. They both allow me to use my gift of servicing others. I offer hair services to families that are less fortunate at no cost to them. On the other, hand I use my Food truck for my “Feeding the Community Event” that I host 3 to 4 times a year. If there is a family in the community that is bareved, and don’t have adequate funding, I do the repass feeding at no cost to them. I’ve never really looked at my businesses as a way to make money, but as a chance to spread the word of God through loving people where they are in life. “Life Happens” to us all. If I can help someone along the way, I will. I’m proud of myself for never giving up, when things got alittle difficult, Trusting in God to always make a way, believing, that all things are possible, and thanking God to still be here to enjoy the blessings of my husband and children.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid-19 reminded me why I could never work without having a nest egg. I always reminded myself to save for what my husband calls a “Sunshiney Day”. 😁. Most people would say, “A Rainy Day Fund”. Be that as it may, my husband and I enjoyed our time home together during Covid-19 as I had to Close both of my businesses. I teach my kids to ALWAYS have an emergency account just incase “Life Happens”, you’ll be prepared for it.
