Meet Kristen Lind of Bluffton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Lind.

Hi Kristen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into midwifery has been anything but linear, but every step has shaped the provider I am today. I began nursing school in 2008 with the intention of becoming a NICU nurse. Once I entered my Labor & Delivery rotation, though, everything changed. I quickly realized my heart was with mothers and babies together, and it was during that time that I first discovered midwifery.

I graduated nursing school in 2011, and my nursing career began within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system, where I had the privilege of serving our nation’s veterans. From there, I spent several years gaining experience across a variety of hospital settings, including medical-surgical, ICU, cardiac, and eventually Labor & Delivery nursing. Those experiences gave me a strong clinical foundation and taught me how to care for patients through both high-acuity and deeply personal moments.

Even before beginning midwifery school, I felt drawn toward physiologic birth and out-of-hospital care. I graduated with my Masters of Science in Nursing from Frontier Nursing University in 2016 and relocated to Savannah to begin my career as a Certified Nurse-Midwife at what was then The Midwife Group & Birth Center. Over the next decade, I immersed myself in the birth center model of care while also taking time away to grow my own family and work travel Labor & Delivery contracts.

My personal birth experiences—two home births and one birth center birth—deeply influenced my philosophy of care and ultimately inspired me to open my own practice. While the birth center model is truly beautiful and allows midwifery to thrive, I felt called to create something even more personal: a practice centered on deeper relationships, individualized care, and a holistic approach that fully aligns with my values surrounding pregnancy, birth, and wellness.

I began building my practice while pregnant with my youngest child, and by Spring 2025, everything aligned for me to begin accepting clients. Since then, the practice has flourished in ways I could have only hoped for. It has been incredibly meaningful to create a space where women feel seen, heard, supported, and empowered throughout their journeys into motherhood.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly has not been a smooth road to get here. One of the greatest gifts within midwifery, though, is that midwives truly nurture one another much like we nurture mothers. I have been incredibly fortunate to have mentors and colleagues willing to guide me, encourage me, and help show me the ropes along the way.

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the complex laws and regulations surrounding midwifery, especially while serving families in both Georgia and South Carolina. In South Carolina, I am still seeking a collaborating physician so that I can practice at the full scope of my training as a Certified Nurse-Midwife. In the meantime, I am licensed there as a Licensed Midwife, which means my scope of practice is more limited than the education and training I received as a CNM. That has certainly been frustrating at times.

One thing I deeply value is strong collaboration between community midwives and the medical system. During my years at the birth center, we had excellent relationships that allowed for seamless consultation, referrals, and transfers of care when needed. I believe those relationships are essential to ensuring out-of-hospital birth remains as safe as possible, and rebuilding those connections independently has been both important and challenging.

At the same time, stepping into entrepreneurship has been an entirely new experience for me. Suddenly, I am not only the midwife, but also the scheduler, biller, administrator, marketer, and business owner. The learning curve has been steep, and balancing all of those roles while continuing to provide deeply personal care can be overwhelming at times. But despite the challenges, building something that reflects my philosophy and vision for women’s care has been incredibly rewarding.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a board Certified Nurse-Midwife and Licensed Midwife providing holistic, relationship-centered care for women throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. I specialize in home birth and physiologic birth, with a strong emphasis on individualized care, informed consent, and supporting women in making empowered decisions for themselves and their families. My approach blends evidence-based medicine with a more holistic view of health, focusing not only on physical wellbeing, but also emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness throughout the childbearing journey.

I think what I am most known for is the depth of relationship I build with my clients. One of the reasons I opened my own practice was because I wanted to create a model of care where women truly feel seen, heard, and supported. I value spending time with my clients, educating them thoroughly, and creating a space where they feel safe asking questions and advocating for their needs. I strive to care for women the way I would want to be cared for during one of the most vulnerable and transformative seasons of life.

I also bring a unique perspective because of the breadth of my background. Before midwifery, I worked in multiple areas of nursing including ICU, Cardiac Care, Medical-Surgical and Labor & Delivery within several different hospital systems. That experience gave me a strong clinical foundation and the ability to recognize when higher levels of care or collaboration are needed, which is incredibly important in out-of-hospital birth.

What sets me apart most is probably the combination of clinical experience, personal experience, and the philosophy behind my care. As both a midwife and a mother who has personally experienced home birth and birth center birth, I deeply understand the importance of feeling safe, respected, and empowered during birth. I aim to provide care that is both clinically sound and deeply personal.

What I am most proud of is building a practice that truly reflects my values and watching it grow organically through trust and word of mouth. Starting a business while pregnant with my youngest child and balancing motherhood alongside entrepreneurship has not been easy, but it has been incredibly meaningful. Seeing women leave their births feeling confident, informed, and empowered is by far the most rewarding part of what I do.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is walking alongside women during some of the most transformative moments of their lives. There is something incredibly sacred about being invited into a family’s pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey, and I never take that trust for granted. Watching a woman grow in confidence, advocate for herself, and step into motherhood feeling empowered and supported is deeply fulfilling to me.

I also find so much joy in the relationships that develop through this work. Midwifery is unique because it allows for truly personal, connected care. I love getting to know my clients beyond just their medical charts — learning about their families, their fears, their goals, and being able to support them as whole people rather than just patients.

Outside of birth work, my greatest joy is my own family. I am a wife to an incredible Navy Veteran, and together we have a blended family of 6, which has shaped me tremendously both personally and professionally. My own birth experiences gave me an even deeper appreciation for the importance of compassionate, individualized care and inspired much of the philosophy behind my practice.

I think ultimately what makes me happiest is knowing that the work I do has meaning. Supporting women in feeling safe, informed, respected, and cared for during such a pivotal season of life is incredibly rewarding, and it feels like exactly what I was called to do.
