Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelci Gatling.
Hi Kelci, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up as a very competitive gymnast, and with that I was incredibly strong, but also had injury after injury and several surgeries. Through my 18 year career I never had time to slow down and truly focus on HOW I should have been moving to prevent injuries and to use my muscle efficiently to take force.
As I competed for the University of Arkansas, I chose to study Kinesiology and later followed up with a Master’s in Physical Education, I had big ideas of what I could do with those degrees, but wasn’t until I started working at a clinic that specializes in chronic neurological pain disorders that I really got to see my knowledge and background come to play. Every single day, I got to teach people how to move again by going back to the very basics. I retrained individuals how to eliminate poor and compensatory patterns that were developed due to pain and injury. With correct patterns, we were able to eliminate pain and get them functioning again, with hope for return to a more normal life.
As I was getting very comfortable using the muscle activation techniques and utilizing the ARP Wave to accelerate new muscle memory, my family was uplifted to Greenville. Luckily, I figured out a way to serve former clients virtually by continuing their progress via zoom. I have now decided to use that knowledge to return to working with clients in person again! Rise Performance and Corrective Exercise is here to not only work with special populations, but can help ALL individuals learn what it feels like to move more efficiently, increase their strength and mobility, and prevent injury. If your goal is to keep playing with your grandkids for years to come, or keep playing the sport you love, I can help with that!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of my journey has just been finding the confidence to get going on my own. With encouragement from friends, and family, I finally was able to step out of my comfort zone and do something for myself and my family. It took a few other jobs and about 4 years of learning how to really use my strengths before I felt ready. Starting Rise is my way to build relationships with our new community and help people. Rise took off running and I have never been more excited!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rise Performance and Corrective Exercise?
Rise Performance and Corrective Exercise is made up of me, Kelci Gatling, and I am a Body Mechanics Specialist. I specialize in identifying and correcting poor movement patterns that can lead to chronic pain and injuries . I love seeing individuals in their daily environments….. how do you sit and stand, how do you walk, what is your posture, sport activities, …. then detailing out new patterns based on those functional movement…. and ultimately teaching you how to transition those new patterns to harder exercises.
Think of Rise as your middle man between Physical Therapy and Personal Training! I love working with your PT, Chiropractor, and Massage Therapists to help transition to your next set of goals and a better healthy life.
I really believe that a moving body is a healthy body, especially if your brain and body work together. With a series of sessions, we can retrain your brain and body to develop correct muscle memory and help you truly feel what it is like move efficiently and understand your body a lot more. I provide individual in home evaluations and sessions, but also can work with you online via Zoom or Google Meet. I have even recently started traveling to offices to teach basic exercise sessions and get people moving in the middle of their work day!
My near future goals is to become one of the very few Premier ARP Wave providers in South Carolina. With this medical device, you can Accelerate Recovery and Performance by stimulating the nervous system and finding where the disconnects are occurring. This creates a lasting change in brain body connection through movement… resulting in optimal output and functionality. I have been certified in ARPWave for 4.5 years and have personally used it to take a patient from a wheel chair to dead lifting in a matter of months. Big things are coming for Rise!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My kids. They are a huge reason I decided to start Rise. I am and will always be a mom first because they are my greatest gift and our time is precious!
I also love when someone tells me they were able to perform or return to a task for the first time. There is nothing like getting to help encourage and build someone up mentally and physically to be able to do something they absolutely enjoy.
