Meet Jorgie Kubursi of Downtown Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorgie Kubursi

Jorgie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I could point to five years ago as the official start of my career, but the reality is that the roots of my journey stretch much further back. The foundation for my success was laid during my childhood, through the values and morals my parents instilled in me. These early lessons shaped my character and fueled a drive that never faltered.

I spent much of my childhood living overseas in Dubai, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. These experiences broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of diverse cultures and people. Growing up in such varied environments played a crucial role in shaping how I connect with my global audience of over a million people today.

It all began in the summer of 2019, right before my senior year of high school and just before the world changed with the onset of COVID-19. TikTok was just a new, quirky app where my friends and I posted silly dances and had a good laugh. I never imagined that these lighthearted moments would become the foundation of something much bigger. When the pandemic hit, I found myself with more time to dedicate to TikTok. By then, I had already built a modest following of around 100,000.

High school, however, wasn’t always easy with my growing platform. My teachers, in an attempt to be playful, would showcase my videos to the class, and my peers would often imitate my dance moves, sometimes to my embarrassment. Despite the challenges and the frequent temptation to quit, I persevered. The support from my parents and the internal drive kept me going, and I’m grateful I didn’t give up, even when it seemed like an easier option.

As I transitioned into university, juggling my studies with growing my social media presence, I doubled down on my efforts. Posting 3-4 times a day became my routine for the next three years, and the hard work started to pay off. Opportunities began to flow in that I had once only dreamed of as a little girl. I found myself sitting front row at New York Fashion Week for three consecutive years and attending the Miami Grand Prix, thanks to a brand that had previously taken me to Coachella.

Working with iconic brands like Laura Mercier, Prada, Armani Beauty, Ted Baker, Target, Nordstrom, American Eagle, Sephora, Alta, Sherri Hill and more, has been surreal. Laura Mercier was the first makeup brand to ever send me a package, and as I reflect on this journey, I’ve just completed a makeup feature for Marie Claire. These milestones serve as a powerful reminder that when people say “you can do whatever you set your mind to,” they truly mean it. But it’s not just about believing; it’s about having the tenacity to make it happen.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how the lessons from my parents, my diverse cultural experiences, and my unwavering dedication have all shaped my path. Every challenge, every milestone, and every triumph has come together to create the story I’m proud to share today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been entirely smooth, and the journey of sharing my life online has come with its own set of challenges. One major struggle has been managing the blur between my personal and professional life. With my platform intertwined with my daily experiences, it can be difficult to draw a clear line between work and personal time. High school was particularly challenging; my teachers would showcase my videos, and peers often imitated my dance moves, which was occasionally embarrassing. The pressures of constant public scrutiny and the occasional temptation to quit tested my resolve. Beyond these personal hurdles, building a business inevitably comes with struggles like balancing time, facing self-doubt, and managing the ups and downs of public perception. Despite these obstacles, the support from my parents and my perseverance have been crucial in navigating these challenges and continuing forward.
