Meet John Kayton of Carolina Tax Advisor

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Kayton.

Hi John, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a very early age, I knew I wanted to be an accountant. Throughout secondary school, every aptitude test reinforced that path. Still, it wasn’t until my daughter began elementary school that I truly started my own educational journey toward the profession.

As I developed my skills in college, I was given the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of accounting. Naturally, I chose Federal Income Taxation—drawn to its complexity and the impact it has on real people and real businesses.

Before entering the accounting profession, I spent years in corporate America as a business leader. There, I learned how to build, operate, and scale award-winning processes. That experience became the foundation for coaching other business owners to create sound, efficient operations that support long-term growth.

After completing my degree, I transitioned fully into the accounting world, where the combination of operational leadership and technical accounting expertise became the cornerstone of my 18 year accounting and tax career. Finally in 2022, I officially founded Carolina Tax Advisor with a clear mission: to help individuals turn hobbies into sustainable, compliant, and profitable businesses.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road—and honestly, I don’t think meaningful careers ever are. The biggest challenge has been navigating the transition from corporate leadership into entrepreneurship. In corporate America, there are established systems, teams, and guardrails. When you step out on your own, you’re responsible for building all of that from the ground up—operations, compliance, client education, and trust.

Another major challenge has been changing how people think about accounting and tax. Many individuals and small business owners see tax planning as something that happens once a year, or accounting as a reactive necessity. Shifting that mindset toward proactive planning, clean financials, and long-term strategy takes time and consistent education.

There were also very real personal challenges—balancing family responsibilities while returning to school, building a firm, and earning credibility in a profession where trust is everything. Those moments required discipline, patience, and a willingness to stay the course even when progress wasn’t immediately visible.

But those challenges ultimately became strengths. They shaped how I serve clients today—practical, proactive, and grounded in real-world business experience. The road wasn’t smooth, but it was purposeful, and every obstacle reinforced why Carolina Tax Advisor exists in the first place.

We’ve been impressed with Carolina Tax Advisor, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Carolina Tax Advisor really began with working alongside small business owners and seeing firsthand how overwhelming the financial side of running a business could be. Too often, I watched great operators struggle—not because they weren’t good at what they did, but because the numbers were unclear, the systems were inefficient, or tax planning was treated as an afterthought.

Carolina Tax Advisor was built to change that. We help small business owners take control of their finances through expert accounting, bookkeeping, tax, and payroll services—while simplifying the process and removing the stress that usually comes with it. Our focus isn’t just accuracy and compliance, though those are essential; it’s about being proactive, identifying tax-saving opportunities, and giving clients clear, board-ready financials they can actually use to make decisions.

We blend proven accounting principles with modern technology to deliver clarity, efficiency, and confidence. At the end of the day, our mission is simple: let us handle the numbers, so business owners can focus on growing what they’ve worked so hard to build.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Absolutely. My biggest piece of advice is to be intentional and genuine—both in finding a mentor and in networking overall.

When it comes to mentors, don’t start by asking someone to be your mentor. Start by asking for perspective. The most meaningful mentor relationships I’ve had grew naturally out of conversations where I showed up prepared, asked thoughtful questions, and respected their time. Look for people who are doing the work you want to be doing five to ten years from now, not just those with impressive titles. Consistency matters more than access.

For networking in general, what’s worked best for me is focusing on relationships, not transactions. I stopped going into rooms thinking, What can I get from this? and instead asked, Who can I help? Whether that meant sharing insight, making an introduction, or simply listening, that mindset shift changed everything. People remember authenticity.

Another key lesson was narrowing my circles. Early on, I tried to attend everything. It felt like I was trying too hard and as a result, I had no true direction and shifted like a feather blowing in the wind. Over time, I learned that smaller, industry-specific groups—produced deeper connections and better outcomes.

Finally, follow up and stay visible. A short message after a meeting, a quick check-in months later, or sharing something relevant shows professionalism and respect. Relationships compound over time, just like good business practices.

In short: be curious, be prepared, add value first, and play the long game. That approach has served me far better than any business card ever could.
