Meet Jennifer Lopez of Lake Wylie Dermatology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lopez.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in dermatology as a nurse practitioner, fueled by a lifetime in healthcare where I witnessed patients’ frustration with a broken system—long waits, rushed visits, and dissatisfaction with care. Living in the Lake Wylie, South Carolina community for over 22 years, I noticed a glaring gap: people waiting months for basic services like rashes, acne, infections, hair loss checks, and skin cancer exams, especially in rural areas where dermatology feels elitist and out of reach. In Fall 2024, I launched Lake Wylie Dermatology, a cash-based practice offering medical, surgical, and cosmetic services—from lasers and injectables to comprehensive skin checks—welcoming patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds in a modest space that quickly grew through word-of-mouth and trust.

Today, I have a pretty full schedule, prioritizing positive impact and lasting relationships over volume, with patients lighting up when they finally understand their conditions after quality time with me. This extends to my team: I take time to train college students in PA or NP school, which has been really rewarding, and I’m supported by a very dedicated office manager, also named Jen, and a committed assistant, Jasmin, who intuitively understand how to treat people and make them feel less stressed by reassuring them that we will do everything possible to help. It all ties back to my core motivation—bringing accessible care to my community, seeing the joy on grateful faces, and countering the field’s barriers that sideline minorities and rural folks, leaving chronic conditions to fester. I haven’t hired any practitioners yet, but I’m still working on a business model that will allow me to hire others to work in the dermatology field, pay it forward by training them in this vital work, and create opportunities for underrepresented students to break into dermatology.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been entirely smooth—it has come with predictable small-business hurdles, from unexpected costs to trial-and-error operations.

Some things came very easily, like finding the perfect space in this beautiful wellness center, which felt like a natural fit. I was initially worried about working and living in the same Lake Wylie community after 22 years here, but it’s turned out to be a huge advantage—people know me, trust me from my healthcare background, and that word-of-mouth has built a full schedule fast. The hardest parts have been crafting a sustainable, affordable business model that serves all socioeconomic levels without insurance; mastering the ins and outs of marketing, taxes, and bookkeeping. Add in typical small-business growing pains like cash flow dips, vendor negotiations, and balancing solo clinical demands with admin work, and it’s kept me on my toes—but every challenge reinforces my commitment to scaling up, hiring mid-level providers, and training students to pay it forward.

We’ve been impressed with Lake Wylie Dermatology, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lake Wylie Dermatology is a cash-based practice offering comprehensive medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services—from treating rashes, acne, infections, hair loss, and skin cancer to advanced lasers, Botox, fillers, and Sculptra. Our clientele spans high-end professionals seeking cosmetic enhancements to uninsured individuals lacking access, all served with the same dedication. As a very visual person, I know patients remember best with something tangible in hand, so I often craft detailed treatment plans—like those for my teenage acne patients—to map out the process and explain each medication’s role clearly. This approach has made us known in our Lake Wylie, South Carolina community for accessible, trustworthy care that fills a critical rural gap, building a full schedule through word-of-mouth since opening in Fall 2024. We also offer virtual visits for anyone in South Carolina when appropriate, partner with vendors to keep pricing reasonable for patients with or without insurance (including pathology reports for biopsies), and I handpick great pharmacies that provide medications covered by insurance or excellent cash pricing—with free home delivery for convenience.

What sets us apart? I’m not just another cosmetic-focused clinic chasing profits—I’m a nurse practitioner with over 20 years in diverse healthcare, from acute care to outpatient, treating everyone from infants to elders. Patients trust me because I only recommend what research data backs up, drawing on my broad experience to provide holistic insight. What I’m most proud of is our genuine care: as the oldest of four kids, raised by first-generation parents from Costa Rica who had little to no money, I get what it’s like to lack access, so I invest time upfront to build trust and understanding—this pays off in lasting relationships. Both my office manager & office assistant, Jen & Jasmin share this same vision.

I meet people where they are on their journey. I champion shared decision-making, tailoring plans to patients’ values (like going slow and steady with an acne treatment), and I love learning from patients too—medical knowledge doubles every two months now (compared to every 10 years in the 1950s), so I stay humble, listen, and even encourage patients to use AI to fact-check me. Readers should know we’re here for real results, empowerment, and partnership, no matter your background.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up in California’s greater LA area, amid refreshing ocean breezes, my fondest childhood memories are the simplest treasures. I’d spend long afternoons with my siblings at my grandparents’ humble home—immigrants from Costa Rica—swaying endlessly in an outdoor hammock or biking along sprawling water canals that led straight to the beach. I have an incredibly loving family encouraged me every step, filling those days with warmth and unbreakable support.
