Today we’d like to introduce you to James Moseley
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My father started our company in 1994 focusing on high-end wooden curved stairs. In early 2000 he noticed the market trending towards including hand crafted metal work on the stairs, this was about the time I was taking a welding class in my first year of college. He asked me “If I buy you a welder do you promise to make my money back”, I replied yes, I’ll do my best. That’s how we got into doing custom metal work, I put a new welder in the back of a truck and worked hard to fulfill my promise. 25 years later, we have a 25,000 square foot shop focusing on high-end architectural wood and metal projects both in commercial and residential.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not!
Owning your own business is never easy. For years I felt like I was pushing a steel ball up hill in wet concrete.
Every time I was faced with a struggle or a mistake, I made sure to learn and grow from it, b/c if I made that same mistake again and didn’t learn anything the first time around, I would have lost twice.
We’ve been impressed with The Heirloom Companies, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our company is sought out for being one of the best in the industry. We focus on building monumental stairs but also build custom railing, metal and glass doors, kitchen range hoods, fire screens, light fixtures and large-scale sculpture and architectural elements.
I own the company along with two brothers. We are known for handling some of the most challenging and demanding projects.
I’m the middle brother and know for my creative abilities, oldest is more business driven while the youngest is more production oriented.
Our work has been shipped all over the US, but the majority is located in South and North Carolina.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Anything business related. A few favorites:
John Maxwell
Dave Ramsey
James Clear
Patrick Lencioni
Eric Thomas
John Delony
I’ve been fortunate enough to see them all in person.
And I have to say the most practical life wisdom one can obtain is reading the Bible.
