Today we’d like to introduce you to Imee Cuison
Hi Imee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was an ICU RN for 10 years before I learned how to code and become a software engineer. I hated nursing from the first day of nursing school, but I went along with it because I didn’t know what else to do. I decided to enroll in a software engineering bootcamp in Charleston and finally go for my dream as an engineer. That was 10 years ago. I am a software engineer, data scientist, and data engineer. I’m also a public speaker and gives talks and workshops about women in tech issues and a stand-up comedian.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road had a lot of giant potholes. I got pregnant right after graduating the code bootcamp. My daughter’s father chose to step away from parenthood, making me a single mother at pregnancy. My daughter was then born with a heart defect and kidney disease. After her first open heart surgery, she suffered a massive stroke. The first few years of her life, she was in and out of the hospital. I navigated being new to my tech career while being her primary caretaker.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My nine-year-old daughter started acting. I got to be cast in a couple films alongside with her. Right along the same time as she began acting, I started doing stand-up. We are both growing together in our entertainment careers.
I specialize in clean PG comedy. I’m a single mom so I take my daughter to a lot of my shows. A lot of my material is about mom life, but I also specialize in PG comedy appropriate for corporate settings. I’ve performed private shows for tech companies and tech events.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
A comedian, Neil Chris, in Charleston has been a great supporter and mentor. He runs open mics in town, giving Charleston comedians an opportunity to perform often. My daughter is also a big supporter. Seeing her go after her acting dreams inspired me. She is my biggest fan. I love when I go up on stage, and she is screaming, “Mommy! Mommy!”
