Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Jeffries
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been anything but straightforward, and that’s what makes it so exciting. I started with a degree in History, never imagining that I’d end up in entrepreneurship. Along the way, I’ve taken on a range of roles—from being a yacht stewardess, to working in landscaping, to teaching in public schools. Each of these experiences has taught me valuable lessons and helped me build a diverse skill set, as well as meet incredible professionals from a variety of fields–each with their own insights and valuable knowledge.
Last year, when passing time while looking for a new career, I was carving blocks as part of my printmaking hobby when I had an “aha!” moment– I realized that I would do best in a career where my boss would know and appreciate my skill sets, determination, and value my time. So I decided this meant that I wanted to work for myself.
From there, I took a somewhat unplanned leap into entrepreneurship- first with a block printing business and now today with candle classes. While I didn’t have a clear plan at the start, I quickly realized that success in the entrepreneurship world was less about having a foolproof strategy and more about listening to my audience and adapting.
As each of my businesses progress, I’ve learned to tailor my business to meet my clients’ needs with every customer interaction and workshop. Today, I’m proud of where I am—running a business that brings people together and fosters creativity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge has been that I never planned to work in entrepreneurship! Because of that, my business model often changes day by day as I learn and gather feedback. I have also done a tremendous amount of research and worked to hone my skills as many hours as I could fit into the day.
While I would never say the road to entrepreneurship is a smooth one (talk about ups and downs!) my journey has been much smoother than it could’ve been thanks to the mentorship I’ve received from so many people, the warmth and enthusiasm of my clients, and the support from my friends and family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide unique crafting experiences through my mobile candle “parties” that take place in customers homes and in local restaurants and shops. We specialize in novelty candles such as martini candles, and will continue to branch out as time progresses.
The focus of my experience is on facilitating creativity in a warm and encouraging environment where guests’ personalities can really shine. It’s amazing to see the different approaches everyone takes when making their candles– no two creations are ever the same. I find it fulfilling to witness how these sessions provide a chance for hardworking individuals to unwind and express themselves;
something that’s often missing in our busy adult lives.
What sets Martini Candle Co. apart is our client-centered approach. While the candles themselves are important, the true focus of our workshops is the guest experience. Our classes are open, inviting, and are attended by locals and tourists alike from a variety of backgrounds. I love that they are a great way to spend quality time with friends while also getting to know others in a fun and unique setting.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
This is a great question because it is something I try to determine regularly!
I believe living passively is a tragedy, which is why success for me is a lifelong commitment to placing yourself in environments and careers that spark genuine curiosity. This is challenging, but it is also fulfilling. If you can achieve a lifestyle that promotes a growth mindset as such, find a work-life-balance, and make a living– I believe you’ve truly hit the success jackpot.
