Today we’d like to introduce you to Freda Funnye
Hi Freda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely. My story is one deeply rooted in public service, creativity, and community. I was raised by my grandparents in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and from a young age, I developed a strong sense of responsibility and a heart for helping others. Those early experiences shaped my passion for serving my community and using my voice—and my gifts—to make an impact.
Over the years, I’ve built a career that blends creativity with purpose. I work in nonprofit and community outreach, helping connect people to resources and opportunities that can change their lives. Alongside that, I’ve carved out a space as a photographer and social media specialist, creating visuals and digital strategies that elevate missions, movements, and meaningful work.
I’ve worked with churches, nonprofits, and small businesses—helping them grow their presence, tell their stories, and engage their communities. Whether I’m behind the camera capturing portraits or building campaigns to increase volunteerism and awareness, my goal is always the same: to connect, uplift, and serve.
This journey hasn’t been perfect or easy, but it’s been purposeful. I’m proud of where I’ve come from, and even more excited about where I’m going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. The road has been filled with challenges, but each one has shaped who I am today. I became a caregiver early in life—first to my grandparents who raised me, and later to my father. Navigating adulthood while carrying that level of responsibility was a heavy load, especially while trying to build a career and figure out who I was becoming.
I’ve dealt with imposter syndrome and a real fear of trying—of putting myself out there, of not being enough. For a long time, I felt like I had to have it all figured out, but I’ve learned that growth is a process. I’m still learning as I go, and I’ve come to see every experience, good or hard, as part of my development.
What’s helped me most is the amazing community and support system I’ve been blessed with. I don’t walk this journey alone. And in every role I step into—whether it’s photography, social media, or community outreach—I try to bring light. I carry the hope that each connection, project, and space I’m a part of feels brighter because I was there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the heart of everything I do is storytelling. I currently serve as the Community Outreach and Marketing professional for Habitat for Humanity of Horry County, where I help build more than homes—I help build hope. I specialize in community engagement, digital storytelling, and campaigns that move people to action. Whether I’m organizing volunteer events, crafting content, or capturing heartfelt moments on camera, I’m always looking for ways to amplify the voices of the community.
Outside of that, I’m a portrait and headshot photographer. I love helping people feel seen, confident, and celebrated through the lens. My work isn’t just about visuals—it’s about connection, empowerment, and light.
I also serve in ministry and media at Mason Temple COGIC, a place that has poured into me spiritually and given me the opportunity to use my creative gifts to glorify God. Whether it’s creating content for the church or being part of outreach efforts, faith is a central part of everything I do.
My work is rooted in ikigai—a Japanese concept that represents the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. I truly believe I’m walking in purpose.
What sets me apart is the way I lead with heart. I don’t show up just to complete a task—I show up to make a difference. I carry warmth, creativity, and a deep sense of care into every space I enter. I’m proud of the path I’ve taken and the people I’ve been able to impact along the way. My hope is always that wherever I go, I bring light.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Myrtle Beach is the sense of community and the natural beauty—we’re surrounded by the ocean, and there’s always something happening to bring people together. It’s a peaceful yet growing place where I’ve been able to build meaningful connections.
What I like least is that sometimes it can feel limited when it comes to creative spaces and opportunities for young professionals. But I also see that changing as more of us step up, create, and pour into the community. There’s a lot of potential here, and I’m excited to be part of the growth.
