Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia McCoy.
Hi Felicia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
They say, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him about your plans.”
My plan was never to be where I am today — but looking back, I see how perfectly God has orchestrated every step.
It all began after my husband and I welcomed our first son. When he came into the world, I couldn’t imagine trusting a stranger to care for him while I went to work. After visiting several daycare centers, none gave me peace. So, in 2013, I left my job to stay home with him.
When he turned three, I decided to return to work and enrolled him in school. Every day, I found myself worrying and praying for his safety and well-being. By the time he was four, we welcomed our daughter, and once again, I left my job — this time to become a full-time homeschool mom.
As I began our homeschool journey, I realized how much we needed a community of like-minded families — not only for me as a new homeschool mom, but for my children, who needed friends and connection. During the isolation of COVID, that need became even clearer. Once the world began to open again, I felt a strong calling to create the community I wished existed for us.
That’s when World Changers Leadership Academy (WCLA) was born — a nonprofit organization designed to give homeschool families the support, friendship, and encouragement they need. Our mission is to work as a community to cultivate leaders who will go on to make positive change in the World. Together with a dedicated board of like-minded women, we’ve worked to ensure that every child and family feels seen, supported, and empowered.
After establishing WCLA, I also helped to launch Legacy Builders Homeschool Associates, another nonprofit that supports homeschool families statewide. Our biggest project is the South Carolina Statewide Homeschool Graduation, where students are celebrated for their achievements and milestones — a moment of joy and pride for families across the state.
While serving the homeschool community has been one of my greatest joys, these organizations are truly seeds planted for the next generation. They don’t bring financial income, but they sow deeply into the lives of our children and our community.
After my first daughter, affectionately known as KK, was born, I taught myself how to bake. For four years, I practiced until my cakes were good enough to share — and eventually, KK’s Cakes and Catering was born. Our motto became simple: “Simple cakes with exquisite taste.” This business allowed me to contribute to our household income while still homeschooling my children.
As life grew busier with babies #3 and #4, we paused the business for a time. But this past summer, God opened another door when a dear friend asked if we could supply cake slices for their new coffee shop, Vibes Coffee. That opportunity reignited my passion and reminded me of my purpose. We relaunched KK’s Cakes and Catering, starting with our cake slices at Vibes Coffee — and we’re excited for what’s to come, maybe even more coffee shops in the future.
I never imagined I’d be a stay-at-home mom running two nonprofits and a home bakery — all because my family needed me. But through serving them, I’ve discovered my true calling: to serve others. What began as a mother’s desire to care for her children has blossomed into a mission that has touched countless families.
I am forever grateful for this journey, for the people God has placed in my path, and for the opportunity to serve my family, my community, and His purpose.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has definitely not been easy! Did I mention that I helped to start two nonprofits while raising a growing family on one income — in this economy? There have been many challenges along the way, but through it all, I thank our Father in Heaven for His grace and mercy. He has carried us through every difficult season.
There were moments when we seriously considered putting the kids in public school and for me to return to work. That certainly would have been the easier path. But every time we prayed, God reminded us of the calling He placed on our family — to homeschool, to build community, and to trust Him with the process.
I also have to give credit to my husband. He works hard every single day so that we can live this life — one where we have the freedom to choose how and what our children learn, and where they can grow in a safe, loving, and nurturing environment. Without his sacrifice, none of this would be possible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about World Changers Leadership Academy / KKs Cakes & Catering ?
World Changers Leadership Academy is a homeschool cooperative that provides weekly enrichment classes for homeschool families. We serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade, offering not only classes but also field trips, events, and a strong sense of community for both parents and students.
As the Founder and Program Manager, I oversee the day-to-day operations of the co-op. What truly sets World Changers apart is that our teachers are also our parents. We’ve created a unique environment where parents aren’t just dropping off their children — they’re actively engaged, teaching, learning, and supporting one another throughout their homeschool journey.
Our co-op isn’t just about academics; it’s about leadership. In every class, event, and field trip, we intentionally focus on building future leaders — confident, compassionate young people who will go out and make a difference in the world.
KK’s Cakes and Catering is my other passion — a home-based cottage bakery built on the belief that simple cakes can have exquisite taste. People often ask if I create elaborate, custom cakes, but my specialty lies in crafting delicious, homemade cakes that remind you of family gatherings and holiday meals. Not everyone can bake from scratch, but everyone loves the taste of a fresh, homemade cake — and that’s what we provide.
One of my proudest moments has been seeing KK’s Cakes and Catering featured in Vibes Coffee Shop, where our cake slices are now available for the community to enjoy. Each slice represents not just a dessert, but a piece of our story — a homeschool family working hard, dreaming big, and sharing joy through our creations.
We’re always experimenting with new flavors and ideas, and we’re excited for what the future holds. Whether it’s through education or baking, our mission remains the same: to serve others with excellence, love, and purpose.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’m a native of Columbia, not born but raised. Growing up, I always said I’d never stay here — I dreamed of moving to a big city. And I did! After I got married, my husband and I moved away, even spending some time in New York. But eventually, family brought me back home.
After being gone for about ten years, I can honestly say I see Columbia with new eyes — and I love it! I love the sense of community, I love that it’s not too big and not too small, and I love that there are so many family-friendly things to do. It’s the perfect balance for raising a family and building meaningful connections. I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.
If I had to pick something I like least, I’d say Columbia could use more real soul food. Being in the South, you’d expect to find plenty of mom-and-pop soul food restaurants, but there aren’t as many as you’d think. Fortunately for me, I cook very well — so I don’t really need it, but it sure would be nice to have a few good spots around town!
