Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Johnson.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been into the arts since I was a young child. When I first began my main medium was graphite, I loved drawing my favorite cartoon characters as well as celebrities. Overtime I begin adding my own flair to the characters that I was drawing by changing their color palette or adding details that I felt represented the character. I then branched out into ink drawings still doing characters. While taking a 2 dimensional art class I was introduced to painting and fell in love with it. I then continued with a Painting 1 course where I began learning more about it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely had not been a smooth road. The biggest struggle for me has been continuing despite the pace of my success. At times I’ve been faced with a lack of support and when allowed it has made me question whether or not I should continue. But the more I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone and have kept pressing it’s not as bad anymore. Art is so subjective and it’s really about finding your strength and boldness in continuing regardless of whether or not you’re making sells or if people choose to support you or not. I had to come to the place where I recognized my art will eventually reach its “people.” But my purpose isn’t to make sells, its to inspire and spread light, if I make sells along the way that’s just a bonus.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well I work as a General Manager at a coffee shop. Besides art, coffee is more passion. I love the culture that comes along with it. Being able to have these positive interactions with the customers means a lot to me. I’ve fled working an office job and have found that simply does not suit who I am. I’ve worked at quite a few coffee shops now, and have seen myself grown in ways that I never thought was possible. I use to be super introverted and social interactions would literally make me sick from the anxiety I associated with it. But now I look forward to my job and being around my team and the community we serve. It is my goal to open a mobile coffee shop in the future and working in these different shops has increased my knowledge and skillset so much over the past few years. What sets me apart is my creating and desire to bring more to the shop. I’m blessed to work under an owner who allows me the space to work freely in the cafe. I’ve been able to draw in such diverse groups of people through events I’ve hosted. It’s allowed me to bring my craft and love for coffee together with my creative artistry. I’ve hosted a galentines, paint and sips, coffee tasting and other events that combine art and coffee together.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Well I personally don’t believe in “lucky.” I believe everything happens as it’s supposed. Whether or not it’s a good or bad thing, I believe whatever I’m faced with at any given moment is supposed to happen.
