Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Big Twin
Hi Dj Big Twin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music has always been instilled in my heart and soul, whether I was singing in my church’s choir or playing in the Drumline in middle and high school. Although I was versed in musical composition, I never imagined or considered being a DJ until I attended Valdosta State University (VSU) in Valdosta, Ga. I majored in Mass Media with emphasis in Radio & Television. While working in college Radio (Station WVVS 90.9FM) I was asked to DJ an event by a local promoter. I advised him that I never DJ ’ed before, but since I had radio and sound equipment knowledge, I accepted the opportunity. I brought My CD book, set up my equipment, and the rest was history. I was blessed with more opportunities to learn and grow from other DJs such as DJ Mike Mars, DJ AK, and Big Nick. The more they instilled in my craft, the more it allowed me to develop my own niche and become a more polished DJ. Over the past 15 years, I’ve DJ’ ed numerous events including corporate, birthdays/anniversaries, clubs and now mainly weddings. One of my biggest accomplishments throughout my career has been winning a Southern Entertainment Award in 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I typically have a saying that I tell people that ever have an interest in or want to “critique” a DJ; “Everyone wants to be a DJ until they become a DJ”. As simple as some may believe DJing is, there is a certain craft, or gift that you must develop to thrive in this evolving industry. In the beginning stages of DJing you’re going thru the phases of learning how to read a crowd, song selections, equipment malfunction, timing transitions, and so much more. There are going to be nights when you feel like you’re on top of the world, and there will be nights like I’m not feeling this, or I should’ve taken another event. Not to mention dealing with janky promoters and their inconsistent commitments and underpaying schemes. A couple of challenges in DJing that I face currently is balancing consistency while working on elevating myself to stay relevant in the industry.
There have been many challenging times in my career; however, there has also been many humbling moments with this process which allowed me to enhance my identity as a DJ. I’m not ashamed to share my stories of failures that happened along the way to those who are aspiring artists and creators like myself. I’m blessed to have met great people along the way that educated me in the business, along with recognizing my worth and value.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For over 15+ years I’ve never been afraid to take risk and try new avenues, whether it’s live music, radio, or even going virtual. I currently produce radio mix-shows for several stations in Georgia: Kiss 96.3FM (Augusta), K92.7FM (Columbus), and 107.9 The Beat (Valdosta). .I consider myself a DJ with no limitations; I have spun on Top 40, Urban, and Urban AC radio stations throughout my radio career.
Spinning in clubs and lounges have also brought much success in this industry; in which, this opened doors to my current business ventures which are weddings, corporate functions, and events. Overall, I consider myself as a party DJ, in which I emphasize on playing those classic feel-good hits to today’s chart toppers. It’s nothing like seeing all walks of life dancing, singing, and matching the energy you’re delivering.
What are your plans for the future?
When I am DJ BigTwin, my focus is making ensuring people are having the most memorable and exciting time they could have. It’s a blessing to say that after all this time people still request me for services and appreciate what I bring to the table. It’s extremely fulfilling seeing people smiling, dancing and enjoying themselves to the gift that God blessed me with. Making more memories with my wedding/event emcee AP (Alex Perry) more success with J² Entertainment & my company Musical Moments LLC.
When I am just Frederick Brown, I am enjoying being a loving husband to my amazing wife Shakeyla and dedicated father to our son Breeland. They are my ultimate motivation to be the best version of myself.
