Today we’d like to introduce you to Derricka ,Javone Calvary ,Richardson.
Derricka ,Javone , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Street Oysters started in our back yard then it went on to my fiance neighborhood in the union heights neighborhood serving to family and friends, but it grew into something much bigger than we ever imagined. In the beginning, not everyone understood the vision. We started small, stayed consistent, listened to our customers, and continued believing in what we were building even when other people couldn’t see it yet.
What made Street Oysters different was that we wanted to take something people usually associate with a traditional seafood restaurant and give it our own street-food twist. We built our brand around fresh chargrilled oysters, bold Lowcountry flavors, good food, and an experience people would remember. What started locally in Charleston quickly grew as customers began following us from location to location and sharing our food on social media.
As the support grew, so did we. We began traveling to different cities throughout South Carolina and beyond, including Columbia, Orangeburg, Sumter, Charlotte, and other surrounding areas. We’ve experienced sold-out days, long lines, returning customers, and people traveling just to try our food. Every one of those moments reminded us that the vision was becoming a reality.
The journey hasn’t always been easy. Running a mobile food business comes with long days, unexpected setbacks, sacrifices, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work that people don’t always see. But those challenges taught us how to adjust, keep going, and continue improving.
Today, Street Oysters is more than just a food business to us—it represents family, perseverance, and legacy. Our children are a major part of why we work as hard as we do. The ultimate goal is to build something that lasts beyond us and gives our children opportunities we didn’t always have.
We’re proud of how far Street Oysters has come, but we still feel like we’re just getting started. Our goal is to continue expanding the brand, reaching new cities, creating new opportunities, and showing our children what can happen when you believe in your vision and refuse to give up on it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Building Street Oysters has come with a lot of challenges, sacrifices, and lessons along the way.
One of our biggest struggles has been learning the business while actually running it. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes—permits, inspections, equipment, food costs, staffing, traveling, weather, maintenance, and making sure we can consistently provide our customers with quality food. With a mobile food business, sometimes things happen that are completely outside of your control, and you have to learn how to adjust quickly.
We’ve also dealt with people not understanding or believing in our vision in the beginning. There were times when our idea was overlooked or even laughed at, but instead of allowing that to discourage us, we used it as motivation. We stayed focused, remained consistent, and let the growth of the business speak for itself.
Balancing business and family has also been a challenge. We are building this for our children, but at the same time, building a successful business requires long hours, traveling, missed weekends, and sacrifices that the entire family feels.
There have also been personal hardships and unexpected situations that forced us to temporarily stop working and put family, healing, and life first. Those moments reminded us that success isn’t just about how fast you can grow—it’s also about knowing when to regroup, reset, and come back stronger.
Every challenge has taught us something. The road hasn’t been easy, but it has made us more determined, more resourceful, and more appreciative of every customer who supports Street Oysters. We wouldn’t have the story we have today without both the wins and the struggles.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Street Oysters is a mobile seafood business specializing in fresh, made-to-order chargrilled oysters with bold Lowcountry flavor and a street-food twist. We’re best known for our signature Loaded Oysters, Rockefeller Oysters, Charleston-style oysters, and our homemade garlic butter and specialty sauces. We’ve taken something that people traditionally expect to enjoy at a sit-down seafood restaurant and created a fun, flavorful street-food experience around it.
What sets us apart is the experience just as much as the food. Our motto, “Street Shuckin’, Geechee Vibin’,” represents exactly who we are. We bring Charleston and Lowcountry culture with us everywhere we go. Whether we’re serving in Charleston, Columbia, Orangeburg, Charlotte, or another city, we want customers to feel that energy from the moment they see the trailer until they take their first bite.
Everything is prepared fresh to order, and we take pride in creating flavors and combinations that aren’t commonly found at other oyster spots. We aren’t afraid to be creative, try something different, and put our own spin on seafood.
What we’re most proud of, however, is what Street Oysters represents for our family. Our children have been able to watch an idea grow into a real brand. They see firsthand what entrepreneurship, hard work, consistency, and ownership look like. We’ve even incorporated their ideas and businesses into what we’re building because our ultimate goal isn’t simply to make money—it’s to create a legacy and opportunities for the next generation.
We’re also extremely proud of the community that has grown around Street Oysters. Seeing customers follow our schedule from city to city, stand in line for our food, recommend us to others, and help us sell out is something we never take for granted.
We’re building Street Oysters our way authentic, family-centered, creative, and rooted in the Lowcountry. That’s what makes us different, and that’s what we want people to remember about us.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What we love most about Charleston is the culture, the history, the food, and the sense of community. Charleston has its own flavor and personality that you really can’t duplicate anywhere else. Being a Lowcountry-based business, so much of what inspires Street Oysters comes from the culture we grew up around—from seafood and family gatherings to the way food brings people together. We’re proud to be able to take a piece of Charleston with us every time we travel to another city.
If we had to choose something we like least, it would probably be how much Charleston has changed as it continues to grow. Growth is a great thing and creates new opportunities, but sometimes you don’t want the history, culture, and local businesses that helped make Charleston special to get lost in that growth. We would love to see even more support, exposure, and opportunities for locally owned small businesses as the city continues to expand.
Overall, Charleston will always be home for us. It’s where our story started, it’s a major part of our identity, and no matter how far Street Oysters travels, we’ll always carry Charleston with us.
