Today we’d like to introduce you to Davis Lemon.
Hi Davis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a second generation dentist with a large family history of doctors and healthcare workers. My mother was an occupational therapist; my grandfather was a pediatrician; my uncle was an OB/GYN, another uncle was an optometrist; an aunt who was nurse; a cousin who is a veterinarian; and another cousin who is an orthodontist. I have had a healthcare mindset my entire life. In my teenage years I worked in my father’s oral surgery office every summer and knew I wanted to see patients in some capacity as a long term career. In college, I had internships at Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC in the operating unit and recovery unit. I felt that I wanted to have a career where I could not only see patients and help them physically, but also build long term relationships and get to know them on a personal basis. I chose dentistry because you can get involved with the community, but also because there is a lot of variety within the profession. No day is exactly the same and I like the idea of tackling a new challenge. After dental school, I completed a residency that broadened my scope of treatments with invaluable experience in surgery and at the same time allowed me to hone my skills before treating patients in the real world.
As previously noted, family has always had a huge impact on my life and is a crucial reason why I decided to own my own office. My wife, Catherine, and I have been blessed with two incredible children who keep our hearts full and our lives busy. It is the influence of my family that has reinforced the value of maintaining a family-oriented atmosphere where everyone can be comfortable going to the dentist. My goal is to make it as easy on the patient as possible. This is why we offer digital dentistry with same day crowns and digital impressions. I try to empathize with the fact that coming to the dentist is not everyone’s favorite activity and try to make it as pleasant as can be. I am excited to continue to serve the upstate and can’t wait to see what is to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I practiced as an associate for over 4 years before finally having the opportunity to own my own office. Those 4 years were bittersweet. They gave me so much experience in clinical dentistry and how to run an office. They also allowed me the opportunity to work with several people who had great values in putting the patient first. From doctors, assistants and hygienists to the front office, I was shown how important your team can be. This is why I truly value the team I have today and know that our office needs every person to make it complete and function well. Although, I enjoyed my time as an associate and appreciate it, I always had to urge for ownership. I am very thankful for my journey and where it led me to today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We offer a wide variety of procedures so as to make it more streamlined for the patient. Different aspects of dentistry including surgical procedures like extractions, bone grafts, and implants can be done in house. The more restorative aspects like crowns, fillings, and dentures are also done here. Finally, we are also Invisalign and SureSmile certified and can offer clear aligner therapy as well. Same day crowns are very convenient for the patient because it eliminates the requirement for a follow-up appointment, so the patient can be treated all in one day.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I could not have made it to this point without the support of my wife, parents, brothers and friends. My wife, who I have been with since college, has been there through all of the highs and lows of this journey. She has seen all that it takes and has supported me every step of the way without hesitation. Seeing my father work was an enormous advantage as well. Not only just with bedside manner, but also having the capability to talk over cases as I was starting out was vital to my success. My mother has always been the Swiss Army knife for my needs. If there is ever anything, I know I can depend on her. You may even see her answering phones here some days when we have staff out sick!
