Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor White.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for baking started when I was six years old in my great aunt’s kitchen. She babysat me often, and some of my favorite childhood memories come from standing beside her as she made pancakes. She would let me stir the batter or pour it into the pan, and even though I was young, she made me feel like I was helping create something meaningful. Those early moments stayed with me and planted the first seeds of my love for cooking which later progressed into a love for baking.
While most children spent their weekends watching cartoons, I was completely drawn to the Food Network. I watched baking competitions, cooking shows, and anything that involved someone creating something in the kitchen. I studied the way they decorated cakes, mixed ingredients, and brought their ideas to life. Those shows sparked my imagination and made baking feel exciting and full of possibility long before I ever knew it would become part of my future.
As I grew older, baking became a comforting and creative outlet. It was something I turned to when I needed peace, when I wanted to express myself, or when I wanted to make others feel special. Over time, family and friends encouraged me to share my baking with more people, and their support helped me take the leap into starting my home-based bakery, The Sweet Escake.
The Sweet Escake began with a focus on cakes, and that is still the heart of what I offer today. I spend hours perfecting textures, flavors, and designs. I love the process of taking a simple idea and turning it into something beautiful that becomes part of someone’s celebration. Each cake gives me the chance to connect with people and be a small part of their most meaningful moments.
Although the business is still growing, I am working on refreshing the brand so it feels more aligned with who I am today and where I want it to go in the future. Baking has been a part of my life since childhood, and The Sweet Escake is a natural extension of that lifelong passion. Every order reminds me of the little girl whose current passion started with something as simple as pancakes, and it inspires me to keep creating and keep moving forward.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I started The Sweet Escake, I jumped in head first without any real knowledge of how to run a home bakery. No one in my life owned a bakery or a food business, so I had to learn everything from scratch. A lot of what I know today came from taking the initiative to reach out to bakers who were already operating in the space I hoped to grow into as a beginner. There have been many obstacles along the way. Every baker knows what it feels like to lose a cake during transit because it was not supported properly, and every business owner eventually experiences difficult customers and the trial and error that comes with perfecting recipes. One of the biggest challenges is staying consistent and making sure every order has the same level of quality and taste. Since I work a full time job in addition to running my home bakery, I often sacrifice sleep to meet deadlines and to make sure clients receive exactly what they asked for. It becomes exhausting at times, but the fulfillment I get from creating something meaningful makes every struggle worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I’m not working my full time job as a dental assistant, I run The Sweet Escake, a home-based cake business I built from the ground up. I create custom cakes that are not only beautifully designed but also consistent in taste and quality. I jumped into this with no formal training in running a bakery and no one in my circle with experience in the food business, so I’ve learned by taking initiative and reaching out to other bakers, asking questions, and figuring things out as I go. Every step has been a learning experience, from perfecting cake flavors to navigating challenging orders and ensuring every cake arrives just as it should.
What sets me apart is that I don’t sell anything I wouldn’t eat myself. Everything is made from scratch, and I don’t believe in cutting corners. Balancing a full-time job while running a bakery means long nights and a lot of effort, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. For me, the reward is knowing that every cake brings joy and that I’m building something meaningful, one order at a time.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned as someone who markets food is the art and importance of presentation. People eat with their eyes first, so how a cake looks is just as important as how it tastes. I’ve also learned to understand what I truly enjoy and make sure my work reflects my personal style and values. Sometimes less is more, you don’t always need to offer twenty different items at once. It’s better to master a few things first and gradually expand your menu as you grow. Quality over quantity is always key.
Another critical lesson is to never get complacent. The cake industry is always evolving, so staying up to date with current trends is essential. There is always something new to learn, and understanding that you are always teachable keeps your work fresh, relevant, and continually improving.
