Meet Caroline Sweeter of Charleston, South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Sweeter

Hi Caroline, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I, Caroline, have been immersed in creative writing for over a decade. Engaging in poetry, prose, and various other forms of writing provides me with a sense of solace and peace. When life feels tumultuous and confusing, writing helps me find clarity. Although I majored in creative writing in college, I discovered my true passion not in publishing my own work, but in creating a vibrant community through the written word. I had the privilege of collaborating with a colleague to edit our university’s creative writing magazine and was truly captivated by the process.
Now, as I continue to call South Carolina home while traveling across the globe, I am eager to hear stories from diverse backgrounds. I’m thrilled about In The Arena, a fully virtual creative writing magazine, because it’s designed to allow people from anywhere in the world to share their creative work. I am excited to build a warm and inclusive community of artists worldwide and can’t wait to see where In The Arena will go!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey with In The Arena has not been entirely smooth. Since our founding in the summer of 2024, we’ve faced challenges in promoting our open submissions and establishing a strong reputation. Despite having a dedicated and enthusiastic editorial team, getting the word out about our magazine has been a struggle. We’re actively working to overcome these obstacles and are incredibly eager to review and publish the work we’ve received. While it’s been a challenging start, we are excited about publishing our first edition and are optimistic about our continued growth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In addition to running In The Arena, my primary career is as a high school English teacher, where I’ve taught students across all grade levels. This past school year, I specialized in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to students from Central America, an experience that has been the most rewarding aspect of my career. It allowed me to immerse myself in diverse cultures and deepen my understanding of different backgrounds.

What sets me apart is my dedication to bridging cultural gaps through education and creative expression. I’m particularly proud of the impact I’ve had on my ESL students, helping them find their voices and confidence in a new language. This passion for cultural exchange and creativity is what drives me in my work with In The Arena. I hope to provide a platform where individuals from diverse backgrounds can share their stories and get published, much like the students I’ve worked with have found their voices.
