Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Zilavy
Hi Carly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m currently 24 years old and I’m living in Charleston, South Carolina. I’m originally from Youngstown, Ohio and I lived there for the first 20 years of my life. In my sophomore year of college I moved to Texas to finish my bachelors degree at Midwestern State University. I graduated in December 2022 with a bachelors of science in biology and moved back home to Ohio. From there I was hired by my company I work for now in March of 2023. I traveled and worked all year and in October I had the opportunity to cover the Charleston Market for a quarter at the end of the year. That opportunity turned into a full transition and I moved to Charleston in March of 2024. I was so excited as I’ve always wanted to live by the beach. This was my first time living alone and I started making TikToks of all of my travels! I travel for work the first 3 weeks of the month and on the last week I do personal trips. Making TikToks was a fun way of keeping myself company but also a way to document all the fun trips I go on. My dream is to one day be a Travel Blogger and be able to travel the world and show everyone how beautiful our world is and be able to influence young girls that they can do anything they set their mind to!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I remember when I told my parents I wanted to move to Texas, they were so mad. It took some time but they finally came around. While I was going through school I also had to work to pay my tuition, so being a full time student and working full time was very challenging but I believe it made me the person I am today.
Moving to Charleston was also a challenge. I was moving to this new city where I didn’t know a single person and I was doing it by myself. While I still don’t know many people I’ve learned to enjoy time to myself and I try to put myself out there and make new friends.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work for a safety company, that specializes in auto body shops. I go in to collision repair centers and perform a safety assessment for them and work closely with the general manager and their team to ensure they’re working in a safe environment. I travel a lot for work as I have the whole state of South Carolina as my market! I love what I do and I love the connections I get to make with people everyday!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe my two biggest risks I’ve taken were moving to Texas and Charleston. When I moved to Texas I was only 20 years old and had never lived not under my parents roof. It was a huge risk to change colleges and go live half way across the country. But it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Moving to Charleston was also a big risk. I was moving to a city where I didn’t know anyone and I was starting in a new market for work. This was also the first time I’ve ever lived alone. But I believe that by taking risks and doing new things, it really helps you experience things you never would have if you didn’t.
