Today we’d like to introduce you to Candy Spearman
Hi Candy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a hairstylist began with a childhood inspired by my mom, who would often do people’s hair at our house. Watching her sparked my fascination with the art of hairstyling. I spent years in the corporate world before boldly deciding to leave behind the stability of the 9 to 5 and pursue my passion for hairstyling. It was a leap of faith, but I knew I had to take it. After completing cosmetology school in 2010 and gaining hands-on experience in various salons, I embarked on my entrepreneurial path, opening my salon.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating my career has been far from smooth sailing. One significant hurdle arose when the salon I was working at abruptly closed, leaving me with a week’s notice to find a new workspace. I found myself at a crossroads and quickly decided to seek employment at another salon or open my own. Opting for the latter, I embarked on the entrepreneurship journey and launched my salon in November 2019. However, just as I gained momentum, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing us to close our doors temporarily. Despite these challenges, I remained resilient and determined to overcome any obstacles that came my way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I began my career primarily focusing on silk press blowouts and perfecting the art of transforming curls into sleek, straight styles. However, over the past two years, I’ve undergone a transformative journey myself as I embraced the world of curly hair. I’ve dedicated myself to learning extensively about curly haircare through numerous specialized courses and workshops. What truly sets me apart is the diversity of my clientele. My motto is simple: ‘If you sit in my chair, I can do your hair.’ Whether it’s straight, curly, or anything in between, I’ve cultivated a skill set that allows me to cater to the unique needs of every client. Discovering many individuals’ struggles with getting a proper curly cut was eye-opening for me. Hearing their horror stories of past experiences was both shocking and motivating. I realized there was a gap in the industry and was determined to fill it. Seeing the joy and relief on my client’s faces when they find me, often after a lifetime of not knowing how to properly care for or style their curls, is immensely gratifying. I take pride in knowing I can make a real difference in their lives. It’s not just about styling hair; it’s about instilling confidence and empowering my clients to embrace their natural beauty. That fuels my passion and continually motivates me to improve and innovate in my craft.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve learned that things are sometimes different from what they seem. Often, things that look like “bad luck” are a disguised blessing. For example, losing my job during the 2008 recession led me to enroll in cosmetology school. This setback was a pivotal moment that led me to where I am today. Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered both challenges and fortunate circumstances. I’ve learned to approach each situation with resilience and an open mind, leveraging excellent and bad “luck” to propel my business forward.
