Meet Brielle Cotter of Cotter Speech and Language Services, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brielle Cotter.

Hi Brielle; please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Brielle Cotter and I’m a speech language pathologist and private practice owner in Mount Pleasant, SC. In 2018, I started Cotter Speech and Language Services in Mount Pleasant, SC. I opened a private practice to provide highly personalized care to my patients. I work directly with families to provide individualized assessments, treatment plans, and interventions to treat children with speech/language delays and impairments. I aim to provide effective speech and language assessment and intervention using a whole-child approach.

I always knew I wanted to work in an environment where I was helping children succeed. While attending college at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I worked part-time as a developmental therapist for little ones with Autism Spectrum Disorder through Easter Seals. I took a little boy to his weekly speech therapy sessions and observed the speech pathologist. I fell in love with the profession and was amazed at how speech therapy impacted this little boy’s communication. At this time, I realized that my calling was to be a speech-language pathologist. I attended graduate school at the George Washington University and received my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I graduated in 2013 and worked with the pediatric population in schools and outpatient rehabilitation clinics.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running a small business aligns with my core value of being a lifelong learner and continuing to grow and improve as a clinician. Owning a speech therapy private practice has been extremely rewarding. Forming relationships with the families I work with and witnessing children’s progress on their speech/language goals have ensured that owning a private practice is worth it. It has also come with its own set of challenges. During the pandemic in 2020, I was challenged to learn how to provide teletherapy, provide therapy with a mask, and navigate each family’s comfort level with in-person communication. The ability to face challenges by adapting has made me a stronger clinician.
