Meet Becky Lee of Columbia, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Lee

Hi Becky, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Much like every creative, the art form called to me. Movement has always been my preferred language. Dance is an outlet for myself and so many others. An artistic avenue to tire the body, quiet the mind, and expel suppressed emotions. After many years of training, I dove into teaching dance with overwhelming encouragement from my mentors. I began small, teaching at my home studio, and was later invited to guest teach for others. I booked a tour with an in-house convention company, set choreography for other dance studios, and directed a youth competition team. Through these roles and opportunities, I developed an appreciation for studio life but craved more community. With that vision, I decided to open my own training program, Luminous Dance Productions. A place where dancers can come and refine their technical training and artistry without impeding upon obligations to their home studio and team. A place where they can meet dancers from other schools, districts, even cities in a non competitive environment and work toward common goals. A safe place for all.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There will always be struggle and discomfort with growth. Achieving distinction outside the confounds of my former roles has definitely been most challenging. I stepped aside from directing a competing team to pursue freelance work and have also built a program that benefits the entire dance community. It’s incredibly rewarding but a new concept locally. While we’re still gaining traction, my hope is to develop more partnerships to make dance more accessible.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a multi-passionate artist with a heart for our community. A dance educator, choreographer, and business owner. My training program, Luminous Dance Productions, specializes in building technical skills, injury prevention, and cultivating artistry. While I’m not a photographer, it’s no secret that I love to conduct dance photo and video shoots. I am captivated by street art and murals and am fascinated by the infusion of performance art with visual.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Do the hard, scary thing. Follow your heart and serve regardless of perceptions or opinions. Reach out to those whom inspire you and create bonds. Those connections are priceless and will take you far. Keep evolving. Flexibility, patience, and persistence are key to the creative and entrepreneurial process. Above all, stay true to your authentic self and everything else will fall into place.
