Meet Andrea Bednar of Greenville, South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Bednar

Hi Andrea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I always loved anything creative but aside from one summer art class in my teens I never had any training and would have never considered myself an artist. In 2017 I was in a car accident that could have been fatal but I didn’t even break a bone. The accident did, however, leave me bedridden for three weeks. Out of boredom I start to draw and realized how much peace and joy it brought me. From there I experimented with other mediums and fell in love with painting. 8 years later I am pursuing art as more of a profession on top of being a mom of three boys and a hairstylist.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for me (then and now) is imposter syndrome. I know many artists who have been drawing or painting since they were young and maybe even have a degree or extensive training. I am fully self-taught and so I still struggle to call myself an “artist”- I often feel unworthy of the title and don’t know if my work is of any value to anyone else.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve dabbled in many artistic outlets but painting is what I always come back to. I love organic shapes and love to paint florals and landscapes. I think the use of bright colors and gold accents is probably one of my signatures and I hope that when people look at my paintings they can feel the joy and love that went into making them!

What makes you happy?
Being with family always makes me happy- they are my biggest support system and encouragement. Creating makes me happy and this quote from Neil Gaiman really sums up the feeling: “The world always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before.”
