Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Dunavant.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My team, Girls Who Paint Murals, comprises my business partner, Christine Crawford, and me. Together, we run a full-time commercial mural business based in Charleston, South Carolina, but serving the East Coast. We typically produce 1-2 weekly murals for residential and commercial clients working all over VA, NC, SC, GA, and FL. Christine and I met on Instagram a few years ago and partnered to create more enormous murals. After discovering how well we worked together, we began taking on all murals and formed the partnership Girls Who Paint. This name for our duo was on the nose but accurately encompassed what we do and our passion for encouraging other women to pursue careers in the arts, particularly murals. Since we are a mural painting business, we do a lot of client-based work and constantly adapt our style and subject matter to fit our client’s needs. We truly pride ourselves on being able to work in various styles and subject matter and on our ability to work with our clients on revisions to achieve their specific visions. I have my BA in Studio Art from Coastal Carolina University and my MFA from the University of South Carolina. Christine has her BA in Marketing from Coastal Carolina University and graphic design experience from the University of South Carolina. Together, we have a combined 8 years of experience in creating and installing exterior and interior murals.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been as smooth as possible for any business or self-employed endeavor. We’ve been very fortunate to have found each other to work together and for all our opportunities in such a short time.
As you know, we’re big fans of Girls Who Paint Murals. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
We are a female-owned mural company that creates commercial and residential murals, hand-painted branding, and signage. We are proud of our ability to adapt to our client’s needs and offer various styles and subject matters.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 is actually what pushed me into starting murals in the first place. The downtime was an invaluable opportunity to create a mural portfolio. This aligns with people at home and staring at their walls; an interest in murals peaked.
