Meet Allison Batson of Travelers Rest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Batson

Hi Allison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While traveling, I instantly was inspired and loved fluffy alpacas. It sparked an interest in fiber farming and loved the idea of producing my own yarn and other products. One thing turned into another, and I started my own little alpaca farm. I loved alpacas so much and wanted to share my passion with the world. So, I started doing agritourism type things by offering photoshoots with alpacas and that turned into meet & greets and seasonal events and so much more. We now host countless guests and events throughout the year from Galentines picnics to parties. We also love taking our 3 alpacas out in the community to participate in fun events. We’ve been to markets, coffee shops, college campuses, and anywhere someone will have us.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While we love what we’ve been able to build at Alpaca Southern, it has not been easy along the way. After a year of being in business, we were devastated by losing our herd of alpacas after they came down with an untreatable disease. We lost our beloved pets along with our entire business. After some time to rebuild, we decided to restart everything and are so thankful we did.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think I’m the crazy alpaca lady around the town. We are in a really unique business of agritourism that shares our love of alpacas with the community along with providing educational opportunities to learn more about fiber farming and processing from the animal to a finished yarn.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Our family has deep roots in Travelers Rest that dates back to the 1800s. The small town charm is beautiful while it can last.
