Meet Alexander Busch, PhD of Shoreline Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Busch, PhD.

Hi Alexander, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From an early age I was always amazed by how big of a difference the seemingly small things can make. An act of kindness, a meaningful conversation, or a bit of gentle encouragement can really change the course of someone’s life for the better. When I learned about psychology as a way to understand all of that and a way to put yourself in a position to consistently be that person in someone’s life, I felt called to serve and I couldn’t wait to jump in. I left Chicago to head up to Michigan State University where I got my psychology degree in three years and then went straight to grad school at Texas A&M University where I earned my masters and doctorate in clinical psychology. I came to Charleston to complete my practicum at the Medical University of South Carolina and I fell in love in more ways than one. I met my incredible wife, came to call this wonderful city home, and I immersed myself in this work and am glad to say I have been able to care for some truly amazing people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No I suppose I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road. Years of grad school, long hours in demanding positions, mentally and emotionally challenging cases and so on are not easy. I will say though, that I feel the road has been made a lot smoother for me by the kindness of others who all helped me along the way. I had an incredible teacher in Mr. Bez who got me started, fantastic mentors throughout undergrad and grad school like Dr. Hopwood, Dr. Balsis and Dr. Snyder, supportive friends, a loving family, great first jobs, and even some guidance from other local providers here in town as I was starting up my own practice. The list of people I need to thank goes on and on, but I am glad to have had all of their help and I hope I can pay it forward and help others too.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shoreline Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and I mainly specialize in anxiety, couples issues, trauma, and depression. I offer in-person services in an office in downtown Charleston right next to the aquarium and because I have PSYPACT I can also provide care via telehealth in nearly all 50 states. One of the first things you’ll notice about working with me is my enthusiasm. I love that I get to do this work, I genuinely care about you, and when you overcome a fear, or learn something about yourself or your partner, or start thinking and feeling differently, or find a better way to do something that’s been hard for you, I am just ecstatic. You’ll get big smiles, cheers, and encouragement because I’ll be so proud of what you just did and all the progress you’re making. The other thing you’ll notice is a commitment to dedicated service. I’ll provide evidence-based care in a personalized way, I’ll practice ethically and with integrity, and I’ll make efforts to go above and beyond to help you on your journey.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m trained in and have a lot of experience with helping people with some pretty serious problems (OCD, panic attacks, couples on the brink of divorce, PTSD, etc.), and if you are dealing with any of those I hope you know that there is help available to you and I’d love to be there for you. I also hope that, even if you’re someone doing quite well, we don’t let any outdated stigmas about mental health prevent you from getting help. Life is often hard, it has challenges for everyone, and everyone needs and deserves some help.
