Life & Work with Valentina Mitchell of Piedmont South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valentina Mitchell

Hi Valentina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Val Mitchell, the driving force behind our mission. Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with, service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and cherished household pets. However, my journey began in childhood, where I discovered my passion for training local pups in our neighborhood as a kid. This early love for dogs propelled me to establish my first venture as a pet sitter and trainer while still in my youth. As I immersed myself in the world of dogs, attending seminars and devouring every training book available, my commitment to their well-being deepened.
My path took a turn when I joined a franchise, where I witnessed firsthand the prioritization of profits over genuine care. This experience fueled my determination to create something different—a space where compassion and expertise intersect to empower both owners and their beloved companions.
Thus, Guiding Canines was born from a desire to offer more than just training; it’s about fostering lasting relationships and nurturing the unique bond between you and your dog. Together, let’s embark on a journey where success isn’t measured in dollars, but in the joy and fulfillment of a happy dog.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Far from smooth. Building a business off of strong morals and values has always been my goal. Not everyone will agree with you and that’s okay! My goal as a small business is to continue in that way so I can continue to provide effective, sustainable, and affordable services. Quality over quantity. One big struggle was, we were an active duty military family for a while. With moves almost yearly I had to restart Guiding Canines a few times. Thankfully we’ve decided to settle in South Carolina! We absolutely love the state and the people! Thank you for being so welcoming to us!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a full time Dog trainer and Boarder. I specialize in reactivity and my passion is showing owners that their dogs are capable of being an amazing part of the family.

I don’t really have one specific “most proud” moment. One thing that brings me a lot of joy and drive to continue training is seeing clients succeed with their new puppy or the dog that other trainers have said to euthanize. Every dog deserves a chance no matter what.

I have many moments in my dog training career that always reminds me that no matter how long you have trained, you are always a student. I love to learn and read new studies about how to improve myself for dogs and clients. One important thing to me is fostering a healthy proactive relationship between dogs and owners instead of reactive.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
When I first began my journey into dog training, I had no intention of turning it into a career. I started by offering free training to military members whose spouses were deployed, hoping to help them find solace and companionship during difficult times. One day, my husband Caleb surprised me with a website he created all on his own—a true testament to his support and belief in my passion. Caleb has been my unwavering rock and biggest cheerleader through every twist and turn life has thrown our way. His ‘honey-do’ list is always brimming with tasks. Ha!
He is not only my partner in this journey, but also my closest friend and loving spouse. Together, we’re building not just a business, but a life filled with love, purpose, and a shared commitment to helping dogs and their families thrive.

Also a big thank you to my clients for the referrals. It means the world to a small business! Y’all have helped me grow Guiding Canines!
