Life & Work with Tom Hartnett of Mount Pleasant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Hartnett.

Hi Tom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My father’s involvement in politics has always been a cornerstone of my life. I pursued my education at the College of Charleston, where I met my wife Alison, and we married in June 1998. Following a decade of working on the waterfront as a stevedore, I transitioned to working in my family’s real estate business as an appraiser, a role I have held for nearly 20 years. While raising our three sons, a family friend and former House member, Chip Limehouse, approached me about running for his seat. At that time, my focus was on my family, and I had little interest in politics, so I declined. However, as the challenges of 2020 unfolded with the onset of the Covid pandemic, I was called upon by many seeking assistance, despite my limited capacity to help. I felt a calling so I decided to embark on my political journey after deep discussions with my family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Despite facing learning challenges and difficulties in school, I graduated from college in 2009 with the support and encouragement of my wife, the College of Charleston’s SNAP program, and financial support from my parents. Additionally, I have overcome struggles with alcohol. With God’s grace and the unwavering support of my wife and family, I have maintained my sobriety for 22 years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been a real estate appraiser for over 20 years. I handle conservation easements, right of way acquisitions, equitable divisions of property and probate/family law issues. These appraisals are not your typical bank mortgages appraisals. Often times, I am called to be an expert witness to testify in court.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family, especially my wife and three sons, holds the utmost importance to me Without my wife, I wouldn’t have accomplished what I have in life. She is my greatest supporter, keeping me focused and organized. My three sons are my driving force, pushing me to work diligently to provide for them while I strive to make a positive impact as a legislator at the state level.
