Life & Work with Shannon Grice of Charleston SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Grice.

Shannon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for photography began at a very young age. In elementary school, I was part of the Program for Academically Talented Students, and one of our projects was studying photography. We built a “camera” out of an oatmeal canister and developed our one photo in a real darkroom. I was hooked from that moment on!

Not long after, I started sneaking my mom’s 110 camera out of her nightstand and using up all the film. As a teenager, I finally purchased my own camera and splurged on one-hour photo development at Walmart (have I aged myself yet?). In college, I always carried a digital camera and surrounded myself with pictures.

When my first daughter was born 16 years ago, my husband gifted me my very first DSLR. I began posting images online, and before long, people started asking me to do sessions. That’s when my business really took off. Over the years, my art has grown, evolved, and improved, but the heart of it has always stayed the same—the connections. Watching families and loved ones grow and being trusted to capture those moments is an absolute blessing.

Outside of photography, I work full-time for the Navy, raise my two teenagers, go on adventures with my husband, travel, and do my best to enjoy the heck out of life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are definitely challenges that come with this business. The first one for me was learning not to compare myself to other photographers. Charleston has so many talented photographers, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you’re not good enough. But I’ve realized that comparison really is the thief of joy!

Another big obstacle in the beginning was figuring out how to balance everything—my full-time job, my photography, and my family. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely took some trial and error, but over time I’ve found a rhythm that works for us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I try to capture the genuine feelings and love during my sessions. While I always include the traditional posed shots, some of my favorites are the candid moments in between. To keep things relaxed, I’ll often play little games that make the experience more fun—especially for the kids (and, let’s be honest, for the men too!). My style is true to color, and I put a lot of care into highlighting the beauty in every detail. I specialize in capturing Seniors (high school, college, grad or Med school), families, maternity, and weddings. More than anything, I want clients to leave a session feeling even more in love, a little happier, and like they’ve made a true friend in me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is that you leave a session feeling better than when you arrived. I want the experience to be laid back, fun, and truly memorable. Of course, we want beautiful images, but I also want you to feel those images—so that when you look back at them, you remember the emotions and the special season of life you were in. It’s important to me that you walk away with a stronger connection to yourself, your loved ones, and even to me. My hope is to build lasting relationships and continue capturing your story for years to come.
