Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarlett Freeman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up writing songs in a little journal when I was a kid, and sang all the time. I sang on the worship team at my church as soon as I was old enough, and took voice lessons with our worship director. I absolutely loved it, and decided to start learning piano in high school so I could get more serious with my songwriting and maybe even be able to perform more effectively! My first heartbreak in high school sparked my interest in songwriting even more as writing music felt like the only thing that brought me any comfort in that time. I even had the opportunity to record three of my original songs when I was in high school at two different recording studios in the Charlotte area. This passion for songwriting led me to study Commercial Music and Composition at Anderson University, so I could hopefully grow my skills and become a better songwriter! I continued writing throughout my studies and had the opportunity to perform multiple new original songs at concerts with the South Carolina School of the Arts and I even got to record a worship song at the amazing GAT3 studio in Charlotte, NC which was an incredible experience! This past summer, I got to work as an intern at The Animal Farm Music, a small music label and artist management group in London, England and I learned so much from the professional musicians I had the opportunity to work with! I’m about to complete my final year of school at Anderson University and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Deciding to pursue a career in music has not been an easy road, but I am so grateful that I have had such a supportive community along the way. My parents, grandparents, friends, and mentors have recognized my passions and gifts and helped me to achieve my dreams in any way possible and come to every show I get to perform in! Thanks to the encouragement and support of my community, the tough road of becoming a musician has felt much much smoother.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter, and I am absolutely in love with the process of songwriting! It’s my favorite thing to do, and writing music and poetry is the only way I feel I can untangle the emotions inside of me and finally understand how to cope with the difficulties of this world. I love to write about the most difficult and heartbreaking things we face as humans and deliver hope that there is always light to be found through Jesus Christ!! I also think it’s important as a writer to raise awareness about important issues and to reinforce unpopular truths. For instance, I am currently working on writing a concept album to raise awareness about relationship abuse. I’m interviewing people I’ve encountered in my life who have gone through destructive relationships as well as using my own story to create a series of songs which I hope will help others to feel like there is hope, there is light, and there can be redemption and forgiveness after surviving some kind of toxic relationship. I’m hoping to use what I’ve learned and experienced to deliver hope to others and remind them that they are stronger than they think and never alone.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I would absolutely love to hear from anyone who is also interested in songwriting or poetry, and hear your thoughts!! If you have a moment to listen to my music or give me a follow on your favorite music platform, that would be much appreciated!!
