Life & Work with Michael Commey of SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Commey.

Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started doing hair at a young age back home in Ghana without even realizing it would become my life’s purpose. I was always watching, learning, and helping my mom and sister with their hair, and that curiosity eventually grew into a real passion. Over the years, I sharpened my skills, worked with different clients, and kept pushing myself to master more styles and techniques.

My journey took me to Dubai, where I spent three years working, learning professionalism, and building the discipline that I still carry with me today. Eventually I moved to the United States, and that’s where Mickey Styles really began to take shape. I opened my first shop in South Carolina, starting from scratch and trusting my work to speak for itself. Through consistency, hard work, and treating every client with respect, the brand grew faster than I expected.

Today, I’m expanding with a new location in Atlanta, stepping into bigger opportunities and building a team and culture that represent excellence. My goal has always been the same: deliver top–tier service, create an experience clients can trust, and build something that lasts. Every step from Ghana to Dubai to the U.S. has shaped the barber, stylist, and entrepreneur I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and honestly, I don’t think I’d be who I am today if it was. I’ve had to fight through a lot starting over in different countries, rebuilding my name from scratch, and proving myself in new environments where nobody knew my work yet.

When I moved from Ghana to Dubai, I had to adjust to a whole new culture and work ethic. Then coming to the U.S., I started with no connections, no clients, and limited resources. Building my first shop in South Carolina took everything late nights, long hours, and trusting my vision even when things were slow or uncertain.

There were times when finances were tight, times when I questioned if I should keep pushing, and times when personal life challenges made the business grind even harder. But every setback sharpened me. Every slow day reminded me to keep learning. And every challenge forced me to become more disciplined, more skilled, and more focused.

The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. The struggles taught me resilience, and they’re a big part of why Mickey Styles is growing today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional barber and stylist, and my work centers on creating clean, precise, and elevated grooming experiences for men. I specialize in detailed haircuts, luxury grooming, natural-looking enhancements, and men’s hair units. Over the years, I’ve also developed a reputation for being versatile whether it’s fades, tapers, braids, color work, or full transformations, I take pride in mastering every style I offer.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I give my clients. For me, it’s more than just cutting hair it’s about making people feel confident, respected, and taken care of. I’m intentional about the service, the environment, and the consistency. A lot of my clients say they come to me not just for the haircut but for the professionalism and the way I pay attention to detail.

What sets me apart is my journey and my mindset. Coming from Ghana, working in Dubai, and building a brand in the U.S. has given me a global perspective on service and discipline. I’ve worked with so many different hair types and textures, and that versatility is something I value and protect. I’m also very business-minded, so everything I do from the way I structure my appointments to the way I build my brand is focused on quality and longevity.

At the end of the day, Mickey Styles isn’t just a barbershop; it’s an experience and a standard. And that’s what I’m most proud of.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people don’t know about me is that I put God first in everything I do he’s my friend and my father, I’m actually very quiet and low-key outside of work. People see the confidence, the precision, and the energy I bring behind the chair, but I’m naturally more reserved when I’m not in the shop. I’m very observant, I take my time with people, and I like to move with intention.

Another thing many don’t realize is how much I invest in learning. I’m always studying new techniques, business strategies, and ways to elevate my brand. A lot of my growth has come from staying disciplined behind the scenes, not just the talent people see on the surface.

And honestly, despite everything I’ve accomplished so far, I still feel like I’m just getting started. There’s a lot more I want to build and a lot of creative ideas people haven’t seen from me yet.
