Life & Work with Mark Anthony of Hilton Head Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Anthony

Mark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was 10 years old I saw Elvis Presley and wanted to play and sing like him. I asked my mother and father to buy me a guitar. After taking a few lessons I started playing for friends and family around 11 years old. That led to me getting into the first Baptist Church ensemble where I played guitar and sang. We toured all over the South One Summer and I really got the feel of a professional musician. From that point I gathered some musicians from my area there in Athens Georgia and formed a band called Tribe. We played local school functions and parties. My next band was called RatHaus. We had a large truck and road crew that would set us up in different clubs around the South. All this time I was going to school and studying to be a Chiropractic Doctor. My next band was a weekend band that only played local called The Changing Tide. I did this several years until my practice of Chiropractic got too large to play in the band and be a doctor so I gave up my music for 40 years. When the pandemic hit I retired from Chiropractic and moved to Hilton Head Island where I once again picked up my guitar and started singing at local bars and restaurants on the island. Now I play at the frosty frog bar and grill every Thursday, Royal Dunes every Wednesday, Robbers Row bar and grill. on Fridays. I also play at top dog tavern and the tiki hut regularly. My favorite gig are weddings and private parties. I currently know by heart almost 200 songs. I use a loop pedal in which I play drums and bass to back up my guitar which gives me a full band sound. My website is markanthonyhhi.com.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the most difficult time was when I had different bands. Dealing with several different musicians and personalities and opinions were very difficult at times. Now I am a solo artist and things Are fun and easy

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I pride myself in being very versatile in that I can play songs from the 40s ,- present. I can do a complete full set of Jimmy Buffett songs or I can even play Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra if the occasion calls

What makes you happy?
I think I’m most happy when I’m playing and singing and the crowd is really enjoying my music. I very much like making people happy
