Life & Work with Marcus Wheeler of Mullins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Wheeler

Hi Marcus, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At a young of 8-9 years old, my older brother (Reggie) used to play bone thugs-n-harmony, eminem, dirty boys, and outkast while driving me to school, which sparked something in me. Around the age of 10, my brother was freestyle rapping in the living room, which made me write my first rap. In 6th grade, around 11 years old, I met Devalent, who would become my best friend and rap partner. 8th grade, me and Dev would rap in the classroom while beating on the desks everyday in last period, having the classroom hype, as they were all anticipating for us to start up. After graduating, me and Dev started recording our songs, coming out with a small demo and full mixtape called “Anti-Cliche”. Right after, Devalent decided to not pursue music anymore, but he still recorded my songs for my first Solo album called “Third Eye Vibes”. That album gained a lot of my fans and they started to respect me as an high level creator. In recent times, as of 2022, I released a second album called “S.O.U.L (Sacrificial Oath Under Love), I’ve taken a long break to handle life, but now I’m back in my creative mode. Many say my style is that of Tech N9ne, Kendrick Lamar, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Ludacris. I’m into different elements, such as Jazz, Rock, Neo-Soul, and Techno mixed into my hip-hop sound and beats. I have another brother, who’s the oldest (Lajers “Dynomite Kid” Wheeler) who is a well known artist in Alabama, and he always gave me tips and advice.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Struggles such as finance, low paying jobs, family, and now my sister battling cancer. Even some poor decision making on my end

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music artist. I tend to be more abstract, meaning the core is hip-hop, but my beat choices, my recording style, I sometimes fuse different genre elements into my style to create a different sound and vibe that will stick out to the listeners. I’ve always been known for my ability to rap fast, connect multi-sylible rhymes, and deep thought songs. I am most proud of my release of S.O.U.L. Two years prior, I told myself “by 2021 or 2022, I want to release another album and do more shows”, not only did I accomplish my goals, I also thought myself how to engineer my own songs, with only a few tips from my best friend and old engineer “Devalent”. I wrote, recorded, and mixed my whole album S.O.U.L, did an album release show at the Healing Arts Exchange in Florence, SC

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I may have missed, my Artist name is “Mistro The Lyricist”, pronounced as My-Stro. Grandmother “Sarah Wheeler” who was blind since she was around 13 years old, passed away in 2013. She always believed in my musical talents no matter what, she always invested in them as well. My parents, and siblings are very supportive.
