Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Van Bergen.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The Lowcountry Pastoral Counseling Center (LPCC) is a non-profit, faith-based counseling organization serving the Charleston, South Carolina region (the “Lowcountry”). It offers individual, couples, family, and adolescent counseling, integrating both recognized therapeutic methods and clients’ spiritual or faith perspectives.
Lowcountry Pastoral Counseling Center (LPCC) was developed by the James Island Presbyterian Foundation in 2000 to respond to community needs for affordable, faith-inclusive counseling services.
Our mission statement reads: “Lowcountry Pastoral Counseling Center provides quality, faith-based counseling, life enrichment events, and training to the Lowcountry community by licensed counselors in a private, non-profit setting.”
Since founding, we have expanded and currently have 4 locations (James Island, West Ashley, Summerville, and Goose Creek) as well as virtual services. We provide services on a sliding scale based on income.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We partner with local churches, and over the years some partnerships have ebbed as new ones have developed. Some of our staff have been a better fit than others. But currently we have 6 stable employees and 4 locations, along with telehealth services.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been a therapist since 1990. I have expertise in addictions, family issues, couples issues, communication, grief, depression, and anxiety. I think I have a lot of empathy: I know that life is difficult and complicated and that asking for help is courageous. I have deep respect for my clients, for trusting me to help support them. I have a lot of faith in the resiliency of the human spirit.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I had a very different career goal while I was in college. Life happened and I ended up going to graduate school to become a counselor, and I am grateful But I never planned for this life path.
