Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Young.
Krista, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well I think I would have to start at the beginning when I became a single mom at the young age of 17. I know it may sound crazy but I knew from my experience of being pregnant , giving birth, and holding my son for the first time that I wanted to be in the obstetrics and gynecology field. More so, I wanted to help educate women about their bodies and to not feel the way I was made to feel as a teenage mom. I wanted to be someone’s support no matter their circumstances. I know you are thinking how in the world does this relate to me becoming a photographer, but it is during the next 16 years of my career as a medical assistant, obstetrics coordinator, and centering pregnancy facilitator that I would discover birth and in-hospital photography. That is where it all began. I would spend the next decade photographing one of the most magical amazing gifts that life has to offer, a child being born. I got to witness miracles! I was in love to say the least. I never thought that I would cut back or stop births all together, but this is where the second part of my photography journey comes into play. After marriage, three children, and covid I had left my medical career behind and cut back to only photographing four births a year. I currently focus on family photography and not just your plain Jane smile and look at me photos. I want to capture your story. I want to capture your connection on camera. I discovered I had become a storyteller through my photos. I wanted to see the way you play with your children and love your partner. It gave me almost the same feeling as watching two people become parents, but I wasn’t on call all hours of the night. So I have settled into a family photographer role, even though I will take a hand full of births and elopements yearly.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid definitely made me rethink if births were for me. One moment I would be allowed in to photograph a birth and the next moment I was not. However, it it wasn’t for covid I wouldn’t be a stay at home mom homeschooling our wonderful babies while getting to photograph and tell the stories of all theses amazing families out their that trust my vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I always tell my clients that we are going to adventure and have fun! If there are kids involved we will let them lead the show. How many of you have gone to get those dreaded family photos done and all you can think about is how much anxiety this is causing you? I would call myself a specialist and I hope others would say that I am great at turning those dreaded family photo sessions into just a night of fun and exploring. My work isn’t about those posed straight on looking photos. It is about the way you carry all three babies at the same time. It is the giggles that come from running on the beach. It is the way you two hold hands and look at each other while your kids are getting all that energy out.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am a small business owner, word of mouth has been my best friend over the years. I appreciate anyone who recommends my name, tags me on social media, or leaves a review.
