Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Schultz.
Hi Kate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Mississippi and was always creative as a child. I started painting more seriously in high school and began taking after-school art classes. In 2012, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Painting from the University of Mississippi. After college, I moved back home to Jackson and held various creative jobs. I would paint after hours and sold paintings only by word of mouth.
Fast-forward to the end of 2019, my husband and I were ready for a change. We both really love the outdoors and we thought North Carolina would suit us really well. My husband accepted a job in Charlotte, so we headed northeast!
After the move, I worked an administrative job in holistic health and painted on the weekends. When the pandemic hit, I decided to not go back to that job and dive into my painting business. I’ve been painting full time for the past 6 years and I am currently in 6 galleries throughout the United States. I am so grateful for this journey!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, but that’s okay! I believe that’s just part of the journey.
So many lessons discovered, whether it’s handling sales tax, shipping costs, reaching out to galleries or packing the painting just right so it doesn’t get damaged. Even though I’ve learned so many lessons the hard way, it’s a great way to master a craft and progress forward 🙂
Everyone is on their own unique journey and it’s important to just take things slow and acquire as much information as you can!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to say I paint peaceful moments in nature. I love to paint trees, birds flying, gardens, flowers and more! I can’t quite say exactly what I am known for, because my journey throughout my painting career has been all over. I first painted still life’s, then tradition landscapes, then abstracts and occasionally figure paintings and then a heap of florals. But I would say currently in 2026, my treescape paintings or my tiny cottages.
I just recently had my first solo show at Spoonbill Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina and I painted a collection of 18 new paintings. I think that show and that collection is my most proudest moment 🙂 The show was called The Scenic Route and it was scenes I viewed while taking the backroads to lesson my driving anxiety. It was such a personal show and I really loved each and every piece.
Oooof, what sets me apart. Hmmm… I’d like to say my paintings are quite whimsical and quirky? And maybe those traits help set me apart? I use mostly earthy colors and just a few pops of a bright color, with maybe a pattern or two. Sometimes I add a black cat in my garden paintings too.
Any big plans?
Currently, my future plans are to just keep painting. I paint almost every day and I am loving seeing what I create. I have a group show at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina at the beginning of August. After that, I am painting new work for almost all my galleries. As the Fall season arrives, I move into smaller pieces for holiday small work shows.
As for long term future plans, I’d love to travel a little more to expand my imagination. In the next few years, I’d love to buy land in the North Carolina mountains, where I can build my dream studio, host artists residencies and maybe offer art classes.
