Life & Work with Jennifer Cole of Greenville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Cole.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began with challenges, as I entered the world prematurely and was diagnosed with ADHD at the tender age of 4. Growing up amidst obstacles, I found solace and purpose in helping others.

Now, I live in Greenville, South Carolina, with my husband and our two playful cats. With 14 years of experience in early childhood education and inclusion, I bring both passion and knowledge to everything I do.

Over the years, I’ve achieved milestones I’m proud of—like placing 2nd in the Florida SkillsUSA competition for childcare/teacher skills—and I’ve earned an associate’s degree in early childhood education and early intervention, along with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood, early intervention, special needs education, and early childcare leadership.

My heart has always been drawn to children with special needs. Their resilience and unique perspectives have inspired me deeply, and that inspiration led me to create The Can-Do Kids series. I wrote these books to give a voice to children with disabilities whose stories might not otherwise be heard—stories filled with courage, determination, and the power of possibility. Each character is based on a real child with a disability, portrayed as a superhero with a unique “power” inspired by their real-life strengths. Dorrell Howard is my illustrator, and he has amazing talents in bringing my vision and the child’s powers to life through his artwork.

As the series continues, these superheroes will teach children without disabilities how to interact, understand, and learn from them. Each story is a reminder that differences aren’t barriers—they’re opportunities for connection, empathy, and growth. What began as one heartfelt story has grown into my mission: to inspire understanding, promote inclusion, and make sure every child knows they are capable, valued, and seen.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road wasn’t easy—being born premature meant I faced numerous therapies like occupational, speech, physical, and horseback therapy (pictured) to help me grow. ADHD tested my focus at every turn, and self-publishing my book pushed me to my limits. But every obstacle became proof that giving up was never an option.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an early childhood educator, Special needs nanny, and author specializing in inclusion and empowering children with disabilities. With over 14 years of experience, I focus on creating spaces and stories where every child feels seen, valued, and capable, no matter their challenges.

I’m best known for The Can-Do Kids series, children’s books inspired by real kids with disabilities, portraying them as superheroes with unique strengths. Through these stories, I aim to promote empathy, understanding, and connection between children with and without disabilities.

What I’m most proud of is turning my own journey—being born premature, navigating ADHD, and undergoing multiple therapies—into a mission that helps others. Self-publishing The Can-Do Kids wasn’t easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to share these empowering stories that celebrate resilience and difference.

What sets me apart is my lived experience combined with deep professional expertise. I don’t just teach inclusion—I live it. My stories and work come from a place of empathy, authenticity, and a genuine desire to create lasting change in how we see and support all children.

Any big plans?
My plans for the future include finishing The Can-Do Kids series with my illustrator Dorrell Howard, bringing more inspiring stories to life. I also hope to expand my reach through speaking engagements, advocating for inclusion worldwide, and inspiring others to embrace diversity and empathy.
