Life & Work with Jacob Qualls of Sumter, South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Qualls

Hi Jacob, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It initially started with an iPhone 3 and an image of a lightning bolt, the following year I was gifted a Nikon D3000.
Since then it’s been a snowball.
Selling all equipment and changing ecosystems multiple times. Nikon, Sony, Canon and primarily sticking with Canon for nearly 20 years now – I’ve had tons of their cameras – Platinum level CPS member.

I’ve got a client list ranging from local bands, to Third Eye Blind, from Grassroots Drift events to Formula Drift, and even SpaceX.

The journey has certainly had its ups and downs.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely full of struggles. Sold my gear because I had to several times, but it’s my sanity.
Locally, you’re going to have a ton of hate from people if you’re starting any sort of business, mostly because they are jealous and scared, but the strangers want you to succeed.

You’ve got to Network.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer, videographer, director of photography and so much more.

I’m completely freelance. I answer to everyone and no one at the same time.

I’m known for my broad spectrum of abilities, from live concert coverage, to Motorsports, to Wildlife Commission images and conservation projects.

I am most proud of the fact that I’ve become a “Faces Of Professional Photographers of America”
I am also extremely proud of the connections I have made throughout this journey.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have no advice on finding a mentor, but on networking, find events that you enjoy going to, and stand out on your first impression.

I use Popl as my business card and people have loved the ability to just scan a QR code with their phone or tap to transfer information.
Stands out way more than just a paper business card.
