Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Courtney
Hi Glenn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My aunt and I are similar in many ways. We both love ideas, and I especially love to “run with it” as I’ve always said. She asked me in early 2024 about mahjong tiles. I had never even heard of them. I said yes as a personal creative challenge, and the rest is history. We play off of each other’s energy and creativity, and we honestly are thrilled to be where we are today. Liza loves the term “surprise and delight”, and we often say that when we think about our tremendous growth over the past year plus. It’s so much fun to see our ideas transform to real items.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been surprisingly smooth so far. I would say that the biggest challenge is learning all of the facets of the process. In our family, we have many doctors, engineers, business people, but we decided to become merchants on a whim so the learning curve is a steep but exciting one without much guidance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We design and produce mahjong tiles and merchandise specifically related to places we love and relate to. So far, we have four unique sets, and a fifth that just went to production. We really are so proud to see our vision come together and yield these truly delightful products that we personally love and proud to see that other people really love them, too. I’d say we’re different from others because of our combination of traits. We’re family so we think in similar ways and are close enough to feed off of each other with the closeness that comes from truly knowing someone forever.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think Liza and I both agree that the thing that matters most to us – with Middle and Main and in life – is authenticity. We don’t know how to be anyone else but ourselves so we don’t even want to try. We show up with high energy and effort and are guided by the question, “Does this feel right to who we are?”
