Life & Work with Elaina Ruth of South Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaina Ruth.

Hi Elaina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I definitely wasn’t the kid who grew up wanting to be a chef. Honestly, the kitchen was just where I went to do my homework and eat. Cooking just wasn’t something I had a passion for early on.

That really showed in high school. I ended up taking culinary classes at our local career center, and that’s where I learned about The Art Institute of Charleston, and for the first time I thought, “Maybe this is something I could actually do.” What started as just another class quickly turned into a career path.

About halfway through culinary school, I got my first restaurant job with Maverick Southern Kitchens at High Cotton. It was the place where I realized how much I still had to learn.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been rocky. I’ve struggled with which route I wanted to take my entire career. My mind has switched at least a dozen times. I struggled with being the only girl on the line in most places I worked but it only made me stronger. From 2020-2023, I even struggled with “Do I even want to stay on this career path?” COVID and the loss of my Grandfather really took a toll on me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Chef, educator and master gardener. I teach culinary and agriculture at Fort Dorchester High School. We are a Prostart school which means students not only learn culinary skills, they’re taught business management and soft skills as well. On the side, I still offer private chef services.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I used to love visiting my Great-Grandmother in Easley, SC with my Grandmother. Her house was so comforting and home-y.
