Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a 30-year-old African American saxophonist in South Carolina, I can say that my journey has definitely had its ups and downs. While I’ve had some incredible experiences and opportunities, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the music industry and finding my place within it. There’s often a lack of representation for Black musicians in certain genres, especially in jazz and classical scenes, which can make it feel isolating at times. I’ve faced challenges in getting gigs and being taken seriously as a performer.

Additionally, balancing my passion for music with the practicalities of life has been tough. There have been times when I had to take on multiple jobs to support myself, which can be exhausting and stifle my creative energy. Funding for music education and resources in some areas can also be limited, making it harder to access the tools and mentorship that can help grow my skills.

But through all these challenges, I’ve found strength in my community. Connecting with other musicians, both locally and beyond, has been incredibly uplifting. We support each other, share opportunities, and inspire one another to keep pushing forward.

Overall, while the road hasn’t always been smooth, each struggle has taught me resilience, and I’m committed to making my mark in the music world. It’s about embracing the journey and using my voice to uplift others along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in providing live music for weddings and private events. My focus is on creating an unforgettable atmosphere for couples and their guests, whether it’s during the ceremony, cocktail hour, or reception. I draw from a wide range of genres, including smooth jazz, R&B, and contemporary pop, which allows me to cater to diverse musical tastes and create a personalized experience for each event.

I’m known for my ability to read the room and adapt my performance to the vibe of the audience. Whether it’s playing romantic ballads for a wedding ceremony or upbeat tunes to get everyone dancing at the reception, I strive to create moments that resonate with the attendees. My goal is to enhance the overall experience with music that feels both intimate and celebratory.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the connections I’ve built with couples and event planners over the years. I take the time to understand each client’s vision and preferences, which helps me curate a setlist that reflects their unique love story. I’ve received heartfelt feedback from clients who’ve told me how my music added a special touch to their big day, and that means the world to me.

What sets me apart from others is my commitment to authenticity and cultural representation. As a Black musician, I embrace the rich history of jazz and other genres that have influenced my work, and I aim to bring a distinct perspective to the events I play. I also focus on building relationships, not just as a performer but as someone who genuinely cares about making their event memorable. I believe that music has the power to create lasting memories, and I’m honored to be a part of such significant moments in people’s lives.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve had numerous mentors and supporters who have played a significant role in my journey as a saxophonist, especially in the wedding and events space.

First and foremost, I have to acknowledge my music teacher, Jon Brady from high school, who encouraged me to explore different styles of music. His passion for music and dedication to teaching inspired me to pursue my craft seriously. He instilled in me the importance of practice and discipline, which has been crucial in honing my skills over the years.

I’ve also been fortunate to connect with several local musicians who have become both friends and mentors. One in particular, Lauren Meccia an established jazz saxophonist in the area, has taken me under their wing. They’ve shared invaluable knowledge about the industry, from how to market myself effectively to tips on stage presence and audience engagement. Their guidance has helped me navigate the business side of my music career, which can often be challenging.

Additionally, I’ve had amazing support from my family and friends. They’ve always believed in my talent and have encouraged me to pursue my passion, even during tough times when doubt crept in. Their unwavering support has provided me with the confidence to take risks.
