Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Pohl
Hi Dan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved creating music. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad teaching me Beatles songs on the piano in our basement, that was really a big foundation for my understanding of how music worked and what it could mean to somebody. From that point on, I never really stopped playing or performing. I loved being involved in bands and playing in church. As I got older, I became more and more interested in the studio side of music, such as recording and producing. After spending several years producing as a side business, learning and growing, I finally dove into full-time studio work in 2021. I built out a studio on my wife and I’s property and started having clients come to me alongside the remote producing work I was already doing. I have had a blast expanding the business and have been able to work with artists in the spaces of pop, singer/songwriter, hip hop, R&B, country, and christian/worship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the bigger challenges was getting into an industry that is saturated with producers and home studios. I have found that focusing on the relationship with artists and showing them that I genuinely care about them and their music is what sets me apart from a lot of commercial studios out there.
People sometimes ask if it’s a challenge running a studio that’s not in a music heavy city such as Nashville, and while sometimes it can be, I often think that being where I am on a horse farm on beautiful land sets me apart and offers a unique getaway experience that allows for maximum creativity. There is a misconception that to make a professional, high quality album you need to spend boatloads of money at large Nashville studios, when the reality is that there are people who offer the same high quality, care about you more, and can often give you a finished product that you are more proud of.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I produce and record music for singers and artists who want a professional, high quality product but may or may not know where to start or where to go next. I start with a simple voice memo from the artist, and collaborate with them to create a finished song that is professional and ready to be released. I have worked with artists in several genres and absolutely love getting creative with them and their vision for the song.
One of the artists I love to work with is Corey Ward. Corey is a powerhouse vocalist and songwriter and has performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show, as well as being a top 8 finalist on NBC’s The Voice. We have recorded several songs together including Love Note To You, Tell Me, Favorite Things, and Wasn’t Enough.
