Life & Work with Dan Beatty of Columbia, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Beatty

Hi Dan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up on a farm outside a small town of 5,200 in rural Iowa. Farming was probably the hardest work I’ve done my entire lift – much respect. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. After graduating West Point, I embarked on a 26 year career in the Army. My last duty station was at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. After transitioning from the military, I assisted Governor Haley with the response to the 2015 flood recovery operations then subsequently began my current position at the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly there have been challenges in my career, but great mentors and friends are always there to provide support and advice when needed. Transitioning from a 26 year in the military was certainly a major transition, redefining what is important to you and what your goals are. Having your career path in many ways being defined for you, to complete freedom and latitude in what you become, was an interesting pivot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Working with the South Carolina Education Lottery has been a wonderful experience. As the Chief Compliance Officer, it has been quite a learning process in understanding the nuances of how the lottery operates having never gambled before. It’s a great organization with tremendously talented individuals who work there.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I was awarded the Order of Palmetto from Governor McMaster last year for my work with the South Carolina Military Base Task Force.
