Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Pantoja
Carly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, I was drawn to the world of music and performance. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember-making up songs and performing as a child. Growing up, I immersed myself in classical ballet, piano, opera, chorus, and musical theatre. Each art form nourished a passion that has stayed with me. These early experiences helped shape the foundation of my artistic identity.
In 2015, I took a significant step forward in my musical journey by partnering with my songwriting mentor, Tom Worth. This was a pivotal moment where my passion began to transform into something more focused and purposeful. Tom taught me how to build a song from the ground up, turning my ideas into structured, impactful stories. Our weekly sessions became a space where I could channel my creative energy with intention. Tom’s incredible musical skills, patience, and unwavering support have been invaluable, helping me refine my voice as an artist.
As my writing developed, I found myself focusing on creating songs with meaning that resonate with listeners. Bringing joy and connection through music is what drives me. I’ve always believed that music has the power to heal, bring people together, and offer a place of refuge for those who feel unseen or misunderstood.
When a song truly resonates with me, it sparks something within—a feeling of deep belonging. This is the essence of what I hope to offer through my first release “Like Confetti” and the 6 more songs I will be releasing soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been anything but a straight path—full of twists, turns, and unexpected stops! The high-pressure environment of musical theatre auditions was really tough. Having just 30 seconds to sing and lay my heart on the table, only to hear “no,” really got to me.
The anxiety I faced was severe, literally leaving me physically ill during and after auditions. I remember one particularly tough audition landed me in the hospital the next day. No joke. The pressure I placed on myself was truly debilitating.
Performing has always been a double-edged sword for me. About seven years ago, I was a finalist in a songwriting contest and had to perform an original song for a large audience. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake during the piano part, and the embarrassment and humiliation were overwhelming. That experience forced me to reevaluate everything—especially the lens through which I was viewing myself. P.S…I didn’t win the contest!
It turns out songwriting was what helped me get past this anxiety. Songwriting has become not just a form of expression for me but a way to carve out my own path and rebuild my confidence. The biggest shift has been learning to face my anxiety rather than run from it. It’s still there, but I’m learning to sit with and invite it in like an old friend. I’m coming to accept and even celebrate it. My latest release “Like Confetti” embodies this celebration!
I’ve created my own path—one where I don’t have to compromise on what I love. I avoid high-pressure performances and instead focus on creating. This way, I can make music exactly how I want, without constraints.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I get asked a lot why i choose Misplaced Mermaid as my artist name. The answer is kind of a window into my music. All of my life I’ve always felt I was a little different, like I was misplaced. As for the mermaid, I’ve always loved the magic and mysticism that surrounds mermaids. Plus, this is close as i could think of to be living by the beach! As a kid, my main dream was to play Ariel in the Little Mermaid Show at Disney World …..maybe it’s not too late!
My songs often revolve around themes that resonate deeply with me: the beach, love, reflection, wisdom, and encouragement. These subjects allow me to create music that’s hopefully enjoyable to listen to but also meaningful.
I tend to write songs that capture what makes me smile—like songs with a summer vibe that feel empowering and carefree. Summer has always symbolized a break from expectations, a time to relax and focus on fun, and I love infusing that energy into my music. I’m all about freedom, joy, and embracing the moment.
I’m incredibly proud of releasing my music to the world and even more excited about the six additional singles coming out later this year. Making my music accessible to anyone who wants to listen is a dream come true.
As far as what sets me apart, I don’t spend much time thinking about that. What matters most to me is being authentic in what I create and letting that guide me in everything I do.
What matters most to you? Why?
Faith in a loving God grounds me and fills my life with gratitude. It’s the source of my strength and the foundation upon which everything else is built.
I’ve come to realize how thankful I am to have such incredible people in my life—from my husband and dog, to my family, and mentors. Their love and support mean everything to me.
Life is short. I believe it’s essential to do what brings you joy and spend time with the people who matter most, sharing experiences that make life meaningful.
Making a difference in the lives of others is also deeply important to me. Here’s a chorus to a song I recently wrote that tries to capture this:
“I want to plug into something real,
Bigger than you and me.
Because one small act
can change the world,
And shape someone’s destiny.
If I can help one single life,
That’s meaningful to me.”
