Life & Work with Briana Sandbakken of Downtown Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Sandbakken

Briana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been doing family photography for almost 6 years and I have gravitated towards studio portraits. I use my garage for quick and beautiful lifestyle portraits. I had a lot of family and friends move all over the country and I wanted to find a way to continue capturing their growing children’s personalities. That’s where The Little Travelin’ Studio came in! Now in addition to what I do here at home, I travel around the country doing pop-up personality portraits.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the past 6 years I have operated under the name Briana Noel Photography, and still do. In order to focus solely on these traveling black and white studio portraits, I had to create an additional new name for myself, The Little Travelin’ Studio. In that sense it has definitely been difficult taking an unknown entity and trying to be relative across the entire country! I’m loving the challenge!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I host county wide pop-up studio portraits of children. The photos are only in black and white and are really a great timeless way to capture the personality of each child in each stage of life. I spend about 15 minutes with them and talk to them about what they love, ask them silly questions and capture all those organic faces and smiles that are unique to them. I have worked with kids since I was 16 as a gymnastics coach, nanny, babysitter etc as well as having 3 of my own who I homeschool. I am known for being able to connect with them in a way that makes them comfortable so that I can achieve real reactions and real smiles. I believe what sets me apart from others is my patience and ability to meet the child where they’re at. I can redirect if they’re feeling grumpy or wiggly and engage in a way that it doesn’t feel like they’re taking picture but instead hanging with a funny friend.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I find that just getting involved in the community is a great way to network. When you’re with others, ask them questions about themselves and learn about what they’re passionate about. You never know someone’s life experience and what sort of value they can add to your walk. A lot of times, I have been very surprised. You’ll never know if you don’t ask!
