Today we’d like to introduce you to Tuesday Sanders.
Hi Tuesday, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a child, I’ve loved being around animals. My family in Summerton, SC, had dogs and cats from the time I was born. While in high school, two sweet Westies—Rigby and Barkley—became part of our family. Living on a lake, the dogs were always eager to join in water and outdoor activities with us!
In 2009, I moved to the Lowcountry of South Carolina to pursue my bachelor’s degree from Charleston Southern University. In addition to my business and management career, over the past 10 years I’ve also provided pet care for friends and family in the area.
In 2017, near the end of their lives, Rigby and Barkley relocated to Summerville, SC, to live with me full-time due to their increased need for specialized care as they coped with congestive heart failure, diabetes, and more. Although it was difficult to see them age, it was deeply rewarding to know they were receiving quality time, care, and love.
In 2019, I chose to pursue pet care full-time—integrating my love for business and my love for animals. The Bark Tales Pet Sitting was born!
Since launching the business, I’ve had the chance to love and care for many dogs varying in age, size, breed, and medical needs. I’ve also had the opportunity, as a business owner, to adapt and restructure the business as life evolves. As of now, what works best is offering in-home boarding and Monday–Friday midday visits around Summerville for working pet parents. Their little fur babies need extra love and attention!
I like to board dogs who are friendly with others so we can all live together comfortably in the house. When I leave, they’re separated by family or placed in crates as needed—safety is always a top priority.
A couple of years ago, I had artificial turf installed in the backyard, which has been a lifesaver—for my home, my allergies, and keeping the dogs clean. They absolutely love it—it’s the best back scratcher!
Animals truly make me happy. I feel deeply connected to all I come in contact with, and those I get to love and care for each hold a special place in my heart. It’s an honor and a privilege to have turned this passion into a business, and I know I’m truly blessed.
Can you talk to us about some of the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been smooth sailing?
I started my business in May 2019, and as we all know, starting a business takes social effort—presenting yourself, shaking hands, meeting people, and building a reputation. Pet care also depends on people traveling for leisure or vacations, so I can care for their fur babies.
Then, in March 2020, COVID happened and shut down the world. I was very worried about my business, but I have deep faith in Jesus and knew He would provide. I prayed that if this was His will, He would make it work.
Right before the pandemic, I had one steady Monday–Friday midday client. Throughout the entire shutdown, they kept me on and paid me even when I wasn’t needed. Aimee and Ruth truly helped keep my head above water, and through that time, we grew close—they’ve become family. They, along with Atticus and Mitchell, will always hold a special place in my heart.
Around that same time, I also began assisting one of my dearest friends as a wedding assistant. That was extremely fun and rewarding—I learned so much and gained wonderful experience!
I made it through the shutdown, and my business began to grow rapidly through word of mouth. I went from twiddling my thumbs to barely having time to sit down and watch a TV show. It’s been incredible to witness the growth and community support.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Bark Tales Pet Sitting ?
I own a boarding business for dogs, and I board them right in my home. I’m a bit different from most boarding options because I only take dogs who get along well with others—so we can all live together as a pack. Most places crate or rotate dogs, but I prefer a different, more home-based approach. It’s not for everyone, but it works beautifully here. It’s fun, active, interactive, and thoughtfully managed.
When I do need to leave the house, I separate dogs by family or crate them if needed. I have child locks on the doors for safety, cameras in each room, sound machines, and even neighbors with keys in case of emergency.
All of my dogs hold very special places in my heart—I love big!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I always welcome donations of toys—we go through quite a few here at The Bark Tales! For the stuffed animals, we jokingly call it an “autopsy” when they get de-stuffed. Some I can perform “surgery” on, but many are too far gone for saving.
I’m also looking for people who would be a great fit for my team. I do have contractors who help occasionally, but I’m mainly a one-woman show. Having a few more reliable people to call when I need a vacation, visit, or weekend getaway would be a huge help.
Final Thoughts
Animals are my heart. Every dog I meet brings a new story, a new friendship, and a new reason to love what I do. Running The Bark Tales Pet Sitting has been one of the greatest blessings of my life—and I’m so grateful to share that love with every family I serve.
